Kalei Sorensen and Gretchen Bowie drove in a combined seven runs
BEAUMONT, Texas (Feb. 23, 2020) – With a 15-hit explosion on Sunday afternoon, the St. John's softball team extended its winning streak to two with a 12-5 victory over Northern Colorado in the finale of the Cardinal Classic.
Five Johnnies recorded at least two hits on the afternoon, while Gretchen Bowie registered a team-high three base knocks in four appearances. The senior third baseman also knocked in a trio of runs while crossing the plate just once. The Sparta, N.J., native went a combined 12-for-20 with eight RBIs and six runs scored while in Beaumont.
Kaitlyn Lologo, Natalie Giroux, Laura Delgado and Kalei Sorensen all recorded a pair of hits in Sunday's win. Sorensen continued to break personal best marks, hitting her first career home run along with a career-high four RBIs against Northern Colorado.
Freshman standout Erin Brown also picked up her second win of the weekend and third of the season after coming on in relief in the second inning. The Thousand Oaks, Calif., native allowed just two runs on five hits to hold off the Bears.
St. John's jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after the top of the first frame. A leadoff single to left-center by Lologo, followed by a base knock to right from Bowie gave the Red Storm runners on first and third with no outs.
Two batters later, Cody laced a single to left field to bring Lologo around to score and give the Johnnies a 1-0 advantage. In the ensuing at-bat, Sorensen rocked a pitch through the left side, driving in a pair of runs on her single to extend the lead to three, 3-0.
The Red Storm defense held off a Bears' scare in the bottom half, despite the two runs that crossed the plate, 3-2. On the final play of the inning, a single was hit to center to bring a Bears' runner home. Sorensen hit Lologo at the cut, who then sent the ball to second and caught Northern Colorado's runner too far off the base. After the tag at second, Amelia Ditolvo launched a throw to the plate for the final out of the inning to turn the double play.
In the top of the second, St. John's doubled its run total by putting another three-spot on the board. After a pair of walks to Delgado and Kamryn Tiumalu, Lologo slapped a double down the left field line to push the Red Storm lead to two, 4-2.
Bowie followed up with an RBI infield single toward second base to drive in Tiumalu and lifted the Johnnies to a 5-2 advantage. St. John's tacked on one more run before the end of the frame when Lologo scored on a wild throw to home plate after a steal, boosting the Red Storm to a 6-2 lead.
Northern Colorado added another run in the bottom of the second, 6-3, before both teams were held off the board for the next three innings. Lologo concluded the fifth frame with an unassisted double play at first base, reeling in a hot shot down the first base line before stepping on the bag.
St. John's put up two tallies in the sixth inning to increase the margin to five, 8-3. After a pair of bloop singles by Delgado and Tiumalu to start the inning, Bowie scorched a double to right-center, bringing both base runners around to score.
The Bears tagged Brown with a two-run bottom of the sixth to cut its deficit to three, 8-5, before the Johnnies unloaded four tallies in the seventh inning.
After a Cody reached base on an error, Sorensen belted her first career homer to dead center, extending the margin to five, 10-5. Delgado pushed the lead to six on an RBI double down the left field line, only to come around to score after Elyse Morris beat out an infield single and gave the Johnnies' a 12-5 advantage.
