St. John’s Hits West Coast for San Diego Classic

The Red Storm holds combined 6-6 record against weekend opponents
QUEENS, N.Y. (Feb. 26, 2020) – Following two-straight wins to conclude its trip in Texas, the St. John's softball team will look to build upon its successes when the team heads to the West Coast for the San Diego Classic on Feb. 28-March 1.
The Red Storm will open the five-game slate with a matchup against Long Beach State at 2:30 p.m. ET on Friday, followed by a contest with San Diego at 7:30 p.m. ET. The Johnnies will kick off day two against San Jose State at noon ET, before squaring off with San Diego State at 2:30 p.m. ET on Saturday.
St. John's will close out the weekend with a noon ET contest with Mount St. Mary's, meeting for the first time in nearly 20 years. The Johnnies knocked off the Mountaineers in its only matchup, 3-0, on March 11, 2000.
In 12 all-time contests against the opposition, the Red Storm holds a combined 6-6 record, defeating each team at least once while downing San Diego twice.
Senior Gretchen Bowie garnered her fourth career BIG EAST Player of the Week award on Feb. 24, the most in program history. The Sparta, N.J., native crushed a conference-leading 12 hits and eight RBIs while scoring a team-high six runs at the Cardinal Classic. The Johnnies' third baseman also registered a trio of base knocks in all three games against Northern Colorado.
Kaitlyn Lologo was an integral part of the Johnnies' successes at Lamar University, earning her first career BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll selection. The Irvine, Calif., native emerged as a top candidate for the leadoff spot in the Red Storm's lineup after registering seven hits, four runs scored and a pair of RBIs. St. John's sophomore has recorded six of her 10 hits and six of her seven runs scored from the lineup's top spot.
Lologo played three different positions in Beaumont, tackling responsibilities in center field, shortstop and first base for the Johnnies. She factored in 34 of her 35 putout opportunities and turned an unassisted double play.
Southern hospitality treated Kalei Sorensen well for the second-straight weekend as the junior shined in Lonestar State. In 10 games played in Texas this season, she recorded a .321 batting average along with seven RBIs and smacked her first career home run.
Through the first 15 games of the season, the Valencia, Calif., native has doubled her career hit total (24), racking up 12 base knocks. Sorensen has been on fire with two outs, batting .538 (7-for-13) and registering all eight of her RBIs with the final out looming.
Long Beach State enters the weekend with an 8-7 record after winning three games this past weekend at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic. Through the team's 15 contests, the Beach has stunned nationally ranked Oklahoma, 5-4, and vote-getters Oregon State, 2-1.
San Diego has dropped two-in-a-row heading into its weekend slate, falling to Utah by a combined score of 14-4. The Toreros have been led offensively by Sara Silverya, who in 13 starts has posted a .444 batting average and a .583 slugging percentage with six RBIs and six runs scored.
Nine San Jose State players have recorded batting averages over .315, helping the team to its 14-2 start this season. Rayohna Sagapolu paces the Spartans' lineup, batting .426 with 20 hits. Suzy Brookshire has hit exactly half of the team's home runs, sending six over the outfield wall. Shannon Haddad and Ilona Sullivan have dominated in the circle, both holding ERA's under one.
San Diego State boasts an 11-6 record through the early part of the 2020 campaign. The trio of Hannah Johnson, Maggie Balint and Marissa Moreno has combined for 10 of the team's 11 wins in the circle. Against BIG EAST teams this season, the Aztecs are 1-1 after splitting with Villanova at the River City Leadoff Tournament.
