The Johnnies and the Golden Eagles will showdown Sunday at 2 p.m. on BEDN
After falling to No. 14/14 DePaul on Friday night, the St. John's women's basketball team will look to bounce back on Sunday afternoon when the team welcomes Marquette to Carnesecca Arena for a 2 p.m. showdown.
The 24th all-time meeting between the Johnnies (14-9, 7-5 BIG EAST) and the Golden Eagles (17-6, 8-4 BIG EAST) will be available to live stream on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN) with Jonathan Yardley and Mike Watts on the call from Queens.
Despite the Red Storm's loss to DePaul, Qadashah Hoppie snapped out of a recent offensive funk as she led the way for St. John's, posting a career-high 27 points on 8-of-17 showing from the floor. The junior guard also knocked down a career-best seven treys while converting on all four of her attempts from the free-throw line. The 20-point performance marked Hoppie's ninth of the season and second in the last four games.
Alissa Alston tallied 16 points, for her ninth double-digit scoring effort in the last 10 outings. The New Haven, Conn., native enters Sunday's showdown just two points shy of 1,000 for her career.
Leilani Correa is coming off her first double-double of the season, as the freshman guard chipped in 11 points while tying Kadaja Bailey for a team-most 11 rebounds. Bailey also recorded a career-high four swats against the nationally ranked Blue Demons.
Marquette enters Sunday's contest with a record of 17-6, including an 8-4 mark in BIG EAST action. The Golden Eagles come to Carnesecca Arena after falling to Seton Hall, 72-60, on Friday night.
Former St. John's assistant coach and first year Marquette head coach Megan Duffy will make her return to Carnesecca Arena on Sunday afternoon. From 2009-12 St. John's Head Coach Joe Tartamella served as an associate head coach alongside Duffy. The tandem guided the Red Storm to a 77-28 record with a .733 winning percentage. The duo also helped the Johnnies to three-straight NCAA Tournaments, including the program's first trip to the NCAA Sweet 16 in 2012.
Selena Lott paces the Golden Eagles in scoring with 15.3 points per game. Lott also leads her team and sits second in the conference and 12th in the NCAA with 5.8 assists per contest. Lauren Van Kleunen and Isabelle Spingola are also averaging double figures for Marquette with 11.4 and 10.5 points per contest, respectively. As a team, the Marquette Golden Eagles have allowed just 60.4 points per game while also forcing opponents to turn the ball over 16.6 times per outing.
Friday will mark the 24th all-time meeting between St. John's and Marquette, with the Golden Eagles holding a 13-10 advantage. St. John's will look to split the season series after falling to the Golden Eagles, 94-85, in Milwaukee earlier this year.
Following Sunday's showdown, the Red Storm will make its final road trip of the regular season, traveling to Omaha for a Friday night meeting with Creighton on Feb. 14 before wrapping up the two-game road stretch at Providence on Sunday, Feb. 16.
