Johnnies ride Erin Brown’s four-hitter to third win of the weekend
SAN DIEGO, Calif. (March 1, 2020) – The St. John's softball team closed out the San Diego Classic with a decisive 7-0 victory over Mount St. Mary's on Sunday, pushing the Red Storm to a 3-2 weekend in California.
Erin Brown dominated the Mountaineers (0-12), taking a no-no into the fifth inning before allowing a base knock with one out in the frame. The Thousand Oaks, Calif., native twirled a complete game, four-hitter while striking out a season-high seven batters. In three starts this weekend, Brown posted a 2-1 record while holding her opponents to a .242 batting average in 16.0 innings of work.
Laura Delgado smacked a pair of hits against the Mountaineers, also scoring two of the Red Storm's seven runs on Sunday. The senior second baseman led the Johnnies' in her home state with a .385 average, five hits, two RBIs and a pair of runs scored.
Junior Amelia Ditolvo registered her second multi-hit game of the season, going 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
Following a pair of blank frames to start the game, St. John's (7-13) capitalized on a Mountaineers' throwing error in the third. Delgado ripped a leadoff double to the left-center gap, followed by a hit by pitch to Gabriella Conca. After Ditolvo beat out a bunt single to load the bases, Mount St. Mary's starter Avery Neuhart tried to throw Delgado out at the plate but tossed the ball away to bring two runs around to score, 2-0.
After Brown shut down the Mountaineers in the bottom of the third, St. John's put a five-spot on the board in the top of the fourth.
Peyton Cody and Delgado both singled to put runners on first and second with one out. Following a walk to Conca, Ditolvo lined a single to center field, bringing Delgado around to score and lifting the Red Storm to a 3-0 advantage. Elyse Morris worked a bases-loaded walk in the ensuing at-bat to increase the margin to four, 4-0.
Bowie ripped a sacrifice fly to center, driving in the Johnnies' fifth run of the game. Kalei Sorensen followed up with a single ripped to right field that slipped past the outfielder and brought two runs across, increasing the Johnnies' lead to 7-0.
Brown faced light trouble in sixth and seventh innings, putting runners on first and second each time. The freshman standout shut the door on the Mountaineers in both frames to pick up her fifth win of the season.
The Red Storm will head north to Los Angeles for a duel with top-ranked UCLA and No. 11/13 Michigan at Easton Stadium on March 3.
