St. John’s Outlasts Fairleigh Dickinson, 3-2

Kmett records five strikes en route to her first win of the season
TEANECK, N.J. (March 11, 2020) – Behind Kayla Kmett's first win of the season, the St. John's softball team defeated Fairleigh Dickinson, 3-2, in the Red Storm's midweek matchup.
Kmett allowed just two runs and four hits through five innings of work. The San Clemente, Calif., native struck out five batters on the afternoon.
Angela Saric picked up the save for St. John's, pitching two nearly-perfect innings of relief against the Knights. Saric allowed no runs, one hit and one walk over 33 pitches.
Senior Laura Delgado registered a run-scoring double against the Knights, while classmate Gretchen Bowie's RBI came by way of sacrifice fly.
Peyton Cody and Jessi Bryant also recorded base knocks for the Red Storm.
The Red Storm jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, as Elyse Morris managed to make her way around the bases. Leading off for the Johnnies, the Claremont, Calif., native walked to first before advancing to second on a stolen base. Morris then scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Bowie to give St. John's the early advantage.
Following a scoreless inning for both teams, St. John's grew its advantage in the top of the third. With runners on first and second, Delgado exploded for a RBI double into left field, scoring Bowie and bringing Kaitlin Mattera around to third. Two batters later, Mattera crossed home plate off a wild pitch and the Johnnies extended their lead to, 3-0, entering the bottom half of the inning.
After four stellar innings of work for Kmett, FDU finally broke through in the bottom of the fifth. The home team drove in two runs to cut its deficit to one, 3-2, after five innings.
Both teams were held off the board through final two frames, as the Johnnies picked up their eighth win of the season.
The Red Storm will make its home debut on Friday, following its 23-game road trip to start the season, when the team squares off against Hofstra and former BIG EAST foe UConn.
