Garcia will represent his native Puerto Rico in the sport’s premier men’s international team competition
HOLBÆK, Denmark (March 5, 2020) – For the fifth time in his career, St. John's junior Ignacio Garcia will compete for Puerto Rico at this year's Davis Cup, the premier international team event in men's tennis.
"When I was a little kid, I dreamed about representing Puerto Rico at the Davis Cup," said Garcia. "Tennis has always been an independent sport but in the Davis Cup, you play for your country, which I take great pride in."
The 2020 Davis Cup will begin with qualifying rounds on Friday, March 6, through Saturday, March 7. Puerto Rico is one of 24 teams competing for 12 spots in the World Group II, squaring off with Denmark in a home and away series.
"For Ignacio to represent his homeland in sport is an immense honor and something I know he takes pride in," stated Head Coach Dillon Pottish. "[Garcia] will do great as he is a fighter on the court, gives his all for St. John's and I don't expect any less from him when he represents Puerto Rico."
The San Juan, Puerto Rico, native first represented Puerto Rico at the 2016 Davis Cup and has been a mainstay on the team for the past four tournaments. Garcia has amassed an 11-3 overall record through his first four appearances. Eight of Garcia's 11 victories have been won in singles play. The junior has never lost a doubles bout in three total contests.
In his first spring season as a member of the St. John's men's tennis program, Garcia is tied for the team lead with 10 singles wins through 15 matches. The junior has been perfect when featured between the No. 1-3 singles slots, currently boasting a 9-0 record. The San Juan, Puerto Rico, native has been just as impressive in doubles play, having won nine of his 11 matchups this season.
"[Puerto Rico] has been through a lot with the natural disasters that have devastated this island over the last couple of years," added Garcia. "I love the people of Puerto Rico, they never give up, and I am going to leave everything on that court for my island".
Garcia and the Red Storm return to the court on Sunday, March 22, to face Quinnipiac in Hamden, Conn., at 1 p.m.
