The duo becomes the first Johnnies to earn the accolade since Jackie Reed in 2014
QUEENS, N.Y. (May 15, 2020) – Senior softball duo Gretchen Bowie and Kaitlin Mattera have been named to the College Sports Information Director of America's (CoSIDA) Academic All-District Softball First Team, it was announced on Thursday.
The 2020 Academic All-District Softball Teams, selected by CoSIDA, recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances both on the field and in the classroom. The CoSIDA Academic All-America program separately recognizes baseball and softball honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and the NAIA.
Bowie and Mattera earned the team's first CoSIDA academic recognition since 2014 when former St. John's standout Jackie Reed picked up her second-career selection to the District I team.
The Red Storm seniors are both enrolled in the university's education program and remain active participants both on and off the field. The Co-Presidents of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) have been a staple of leadership for the St. John's Athletics' Department.
On the field, the Johnnies' captains dominated in all four of their seasons, each boasting batting averages over .310. The pair combined for 287 hits, 208 RBIs and 161 runs scored in their 325 appearances for St. John's.
Bowie ranks inside the program's top five in home runs (35), RBIs (137), triples (10). Mattera has been a defensive powerhouse behind the plate, holding a .986 fielding percentage while catching 27 stealing.
Honorees selected to the first-team Academic All-District will advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America ballot. Academic All-America honorees will be announced from June 8-11.
