St. John's Athletics has announced the hiring of Robert Herrera for the department's McLendon Leadership Institute Future Leader position.
Herrera will serve as a special assistant to Director of Athletics Mike Cragg and provide support for various departments of Red Storm Athletics.
"We are thrilled to have Robert join our team," said Cragg. "Robert has already built a tremendous resume from his time working with professional sports franchises here in New York City. To be sure, the experience and networking opportunities he will receive here at St. John's will also prove to be invaluable for his career aspirations."
The McLendon Minority Leadership Initiative is a coach-driven program that provides diverse college graduates a jump-start to their careers through practical experiences and opportunities to build their network while instilling in them the values of John McLendon: Integrity, Education, Leadership and Mentorship. Participants in the initiative are titled as MLI Future Leaders.
Throughout the program, Future Leaders receive hands-on work experience in collegiate athletic departments with a focus on development of professional skills. The initiative at St. John's was generously funded by McDonald's and men's basketball Head Coach Mike Anderson.
Herrera brings ample sports work experience with him to St. John's. He has previously held positions with the NBA, WNBA, Madison Square Garden, the Brooklyn Nets, Westchester Knicks and New York Liberty.
The Queens, N.Y., native held a vast array of roles for those organizations including building operations, basketball operations, community relations, equipment and communications.
"I am beyond grateful for this dream opportunity," said Herrera. "It is an honor to be a part of the St. John's University family. I'd like to thank the John McLendon Foundation, Coach Mike Anderson and Mike Cragg for making this possible."
Herrera graduated with a bachelor's degree in communications from Queens College in 2017. He went on to CUNY Brooklyn College to receive a master's degree in sports management in December 2020.
