The Johnnies and Wildcats will kick off a 7 p.m. on BEDN
Fresh off securing a bid to the 2021 BIG EAST Championship, the St. John's women's soccer team will welcome the Villanova Wildcats to Belson Stadium on Thursday evening for its regular-season finale.
The contest between the two BIG EAST programs will be broadcast on the BIG EAST Digital Network on FloSports. Ralph Bednarczyk will have the call live from Queens.
A win over Villanova accompanied by a Butler loss will give the Red Storm the no. 3 seed in the upcoming BIG EAST Championship. Currently, St. John's is fourth overall in the standings with 16 points. The Johnnies sit right behind Butler (19 points) and two points ahead of Providence (14 points) in fifth. The Johnnies can finish no lower than fifth in the final standings.
With a 5-3-1 record in conference action entering the regular season finale, the Red Storm will have the opportunity to secure its best effort in BIG EAST play since 2018 when the Johnnies finished third overall in the standings.
In the Red Storm's win over Creighton on Sunday night, BIG EAST leading scorer Zsani Kajan recorded her second hat trick of the season and the fourth of her Red Storm career. With a trio of goals against the Bluejays, Kajan has now found the back of the net 15 times for the Red Storm this year to tie Adriana Viola for the fourth-most in a single season. The Budapest, Hungary, native has bumped her career total up to 43 goals to take over sole possession of second place on the program's all-time scoring list. With 15 goals on the year, Kajan leads the nation in scoring entering Thursday night's match.
Shannon Aviza, a graduate student from Medway, Mass., led the Red Storm defense to a pair of shutout victories last week with road wins over Seton Hall and Creighton. The 5-foot-9 defender and the rest of the St. John's backline limited opponents to just four shots on goal last week as the Red Storm outshot the Pirates and the Bluejays by a combined 27-12 margin, including 14-4 on target.
For their efforts in a 2-0-0 week for the Red Storm, Kajan and Aviza both earned recognition from the BIG EAST on Monday afternoon. Kajan was named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season while Aviza landed a spot on the league's honor roll.
Villanova enters Thursday's contest with a record of 7-10, including a 1-8 mark in BIG EAST action. The Wildcats are led offensively by senior forward Chloe O'Neill, who has found the back of the net a team-best eight times this season.
Thursday will mark the 30th all-time meeting between St. John's and Villanova with the Wildcats hold a slight edge, leading the series 13-12-4.
