St. John’s Drops Five-Set Match to Connecticut

Five Johnnies had career-highs in the match
QUEENS, N.Y. (Nov. 12, 2021) – Despite five Johnnies posting career-highs, the St. John's volleyball team fell to Connecticut in five sets on Friday afternoon.
St. John's took the first set, 25-21, before Connecticut (20-17, 12-3 BIG EAST) took the next two sets, 25-21, and 25-20. The fourth set went to the Red Storm, 25-20, before the Huskies closed the match, 15-12.
Giorgia Walther posted a career-high 20 kills on a .205 hitting percentage in the match while Eleonora Tosi followed closely with 19 kills and 11 digs in her first career double-double.
Jovana Askovic notched a career-high 16 kills on a .343 clip along with one solo block while Ariadni Kathariou hit 10 kills on a .238 clip along with a service ace and five blocks. Amariis Garcia contributed three kills and two blocks.
Tiziana Baumrukova was the second Johnnie to post a double-double tallying 33 assists and 14 digs along with a kill while Wiktoria Kowalczyk added in 27 helpers and two kills. Sheena Yoshioka sent over a career-high five service aces and 19 digs while Bree Martin recorded a career-high three service aces. Iliana Rodriguez contributed a service ace and seven digs.
Down, 12-10, in the first set, the Red Storm (14-15, 5-10 BIG EAST) jumped out to a 7-2 run marked by three kills by Askovic to take the lead, 17-15. The Huskies tied the score at 17 before the Johnnies poured in seven of the next 12 points to take the set, 25-21. Walther recorded three kills in a row on the spurt.
The two teams traded points majority of the second set before a St. John's service error tied the score at 17. The Huskies recorded seven of the next 12 points to capture the set, 25-21.
With St. John's up, 15-13, in the third set, Connecticut went off on a 10-5 run to win the set, 25-20. Caylee Parker led the Huskies with eight kills on a .889 clip in the set.
The Red Storm dominated the fourth set getting ahead early to secure the 25-20 victory. Yoshioka and Martin posted two service aces a piece during the set while Kathariou notched a perfect hitting percentage with four kills on four attacks.
The Johnnies were up, 10-5, in the fifth set when Connecticut recorded eight straight points and took the lead, 13-10. St. John's recorded two more points before kills from Parker and Kennadie Jake-Turner gave the Huskies the set, 15-13, and the match, 3-2.
St. John's will host its senior day on Sunday at 4 p.m. when it takes on Seton Hall in its final home match of the season.
