St. John’s Falls to Seton Hall in Three Sets

Prior to the match, six seniors were honored.
QUEENS, N.Y. (Nov. 14, 2021) – The St. John's volleyball team fell to Seton Hall in three sets on Sunday afternoon at Carnesecca Arena
Prior to the contest, Head Coach Joanne Persico honored five Red Storm seniors for their contributions to their program over the years: Jovana Askovic, Sheena Yoshioka, Ariadni Kathariou, Efrosini Alexakou and Rachele Rastelli. The four-year manager, Lia Ehlers, was also acknowledged.
Set scores were 25-22, 25-21, and 25-20, respectively.
Eleonora Tosi led the team with seven kills while also contributing a service ace and three block assists. Kathariou and Giorgia Walther followed with six kills apiece. Kathariou also added in a service ace and four block assists.
Tiziana Baumrukova recorded five kills, 10 assists and one service ace while Wiktoria Kowalczyk notched three kills, 18 helpers and three blocks. Askovic tallied three kills and two blocks while Amariis Garcia contributed three kills and three rejections.
Iliana Rodriguez and Bree Martin recorded two service aces each while Sheena Yoshioka tallied one ace and a team-high 12 digs.
St. John's (14-16, 5-11 BIG EAST) won the serving battle recording eight service aces to the Pirate's two.
Tied at six in the first set, Seton Hall (14-16, 6-10 BIG EAST) jumped out to a 9-4 run to take the lead, 15-10. Led by Tosi with a kill and an ace, the Red Storm recorded six of the next eight points to get within one at 17-16. With the score tied at 22, the Pirates added in three straight points to take the set, 25-22.
In the second set, St. John's was down, 10-9, when it leapt out to a 7-2 run to take the lead, 16-12. Seton Hall retaliated with seven straight points to get ahead, 19-16, before an eventual attack error gave it the set, 25-21.
The Pirates got out to an early lead in the third set recording the first seven points. While Baumrukova led the Johnnies with five kills and a service ace, the set went to Seton Hall, 25-20.
The Red Storm will close out conference play next weekend starting with a road match on Friday at 6 p.m. at Providence.
