St. John’s Defeats Providence in Four Sets

Red Storm splits season series with the Friars
Providence, R.I. (Nov. 19, 2021) – The St. John's volleyball team defeated Providence on the road in four sets on Friday night.
St. John's (15-16, 6-11 BIG EAST) won the first set, 27-25, before dropping the second set to the Friars, 29-27. The Red Storm closed the match with set scores of 25-19, and 25-22.
Giorgia Walther led the charge for the Johnnies notching 17 kills on a .208 hitting percentage. The freshman has recorded double-digit kills in three of the last four matches.
Eleonora Tosi tallied 15 kills on a .294 clip in addition to five blocks and six digs while Ariadni Kathariou hit 14 kills on a .444 clip along with a service ace and seven blocks. Wiktoria Kowalczyk notched four kills, 35 assists, two service aces and four blocks while Tiziana Baumrukova registered 14 helpers, one kill and six digs.
Defensively, Amariis Garcia tallied five rejections, including the lone Red Storm solo block, while Iliana Rodriguez contributed two service aces and 14 digs. Sheena Yoshioka notched a match-high 27 digs while Bree Martin recorded one service ace and nine digs.
Tied at 10 in the first set, Providence (15-15, 3-14 BIG EAST) recorded six straight points to take the lead, 16-10. The Johnnies responded with a 9-3 run to tie the set at 19. With the set tied at 23, the Red Storm grabbed four of the next six points to get the first set victory, 27-25.
Down 7-6 in the second set, Providence got ahead on an 11-2 run, 17-9. With the Friars nearing set point at 21-14, the Red Storm leapt out to a 9-1 run to take the lead, 23-22. Walther recorded three kills in the spurt. Down 27-26, Providence kept itself alive with three straight points to take the set, 29-27.
The score was 11-5 in favor of the Friars in the third set when the Red Storm recorded five straight points to get within one, 11-10. Still down by one at 15-14, the Johnnies went off on a 9-1 run to steal the lead, 22-16. Walther and Tosi notched two kills apiece in the spurt. The third set went to the Red Storm on a Tosi kill, 25-19.
With the Red Storm up 15-9, the Friars pounded in five straight points to get close, 15-14, in the final set. The Red Storm captured 10 of the next 18 points to take the set, 25-22, and the match, 3-1.
