Red Storm to welcome five outstanding athletes in the fall
QUEENS, N.Y. (Nov. 30, 2021) – The St. John's softball team has signed five student-athletes National Letters of Intent, Head Coach Bob Guerriero announced on Tuesday.
Members of the 2022 recruiting class include Miami Stingrays teammates Cassidy Stouffer and Sydney Totarsky, California natives Katie Whittaker and Ana Serafinko and Garden State product Jess Bianco.
Bianco, a versatile talent who plays both centerfield and short stop, will head to Queens following her senior season as a member of the Cherry Hill West Lions. The Garden State standout has posted a .641 batting average over her high school career along with 26 stolen bases. Bianco was named to the First Team All-Olympic League as well as the All-South Jersey team.
"Jessica impressed me with her all-around game this past summer," said Guerriero. "I expect her to be a valuable addition to our outfield and elsewhere defensively. She's a high caliber player who offers tremendous options on both the offensive and defensive sides of the game."
Bianco, a member of the National Honor Society and Italian Honor Society who carries a 3.9 GPA, plays her travel ball for the New Jersey Gators.
Whittaker is a senior at San Marcos High School, where she hit .405 with nine home runs and 28 RBIs a season ago. A member of the team that was named the San Diego CIF Division I Champions, Whittaker has been awarded the San Marcos Varsity Most Valuable Player Award in addition to being named to the First Team All-Palomar North County League, First Team All-CIF and CalHiSports All-State Team.
"Katie will be another terrific catcher to add to our roster," said Guerriero "She's got a strong arm and plays the backstop position very well defensively. She can also play other positions which makes her even more valuable. Her hitting is amazing, and she will provide long ball power and line drive gap power as well."
As a member of her travel team, the OC Batbusters, Whittaker batted a stellar .465 clip along with 13 home runs and 47 RBIs from Sept. 2020 to July of 2021. Academically, she boasts a 3.96 GPA and has been named to her school honor roll every semester.
Totarsky is one of two recruits from Florida who will travel north following her senior season at Cooper City High School. The Sunshine State native carries a reputation as a top-flight defensive outfielder, going two consecutive seasons without registering an error in center.
"Sydney brings a solid defensive reputation to our team as a premier outfielder," said Guerriero. "She has a powerful bat that will strengthen our lineup. She plays the game extremely hard at all times and carries an upbeat attitude in the field and off."
Totarsky is the captain of her travel team, the Miami Stingrays, and led the squad in outfield assists last season. She also hit seven home runs during the summer season. A four-year member of the Principal's Honor Roll, she boasts a 3.87 GPA.
Stouffer, a fellow Miami Stingray comes to New York following an impressive tenure at Westminster High School. As team captain, she has led the team both on and off the field recording a .430 batting average with seven home runs and 35 RBIs. The shortstop has been named to both the First-Team All-Country and the First Team-All State.
"Cassidy will provide infield depth and strong consistent hitting," said Guerriero. "She has a solid glove and a good strong arm as well and can play multiple infield positions. A very tough out at the plate, Cassidy will provide clutch hitting and home run power to help our team score runs."
With the Stingrays, Stouffer was part of the team that came in third place at the Power Pool Triple Crown Sparkler and boasted a personal batting average of .410 along with two home runs and 10 RBIs. She also helped lead the team to a top 10 finish at the Junior Olympic Cup with a .478 batting average and 10 RBIs. The travel team also recorded a top 15 finish at PGF Huntington Beach. Outside of softball, Stouffer is a four-year starter for the varsity basketball team.
Serafinko is a pitcher who will travel cross-country to the Big Apple. At St. Lucy's Priory High School, Serafinko has been influential inside the circle. She is a four-year varsity softball letter winner who led the team in both pitching wins and home runs during the 2021 campaign.
"Ana is a strong competitor in the circle and will bolster the pitching staff in depth," said Guerriero. "She has a very good approach to the hitters and can use power and deception to enhance her craft. I expect her to have an immediate impact to our team."
A member of the Cal Cruisers Gold Sievers, Serafinko boasted a 1.68 ERA which included 26 consecutive scoreless innings at the beginning of the season. At the plate, she has hit at a .351 clip with four home runs during the current season. A four-year scholar athlete, she is also a four-year starter for the varsity basketball team and was named team MVP her freshman and sophomore year. Stouffer has a stellar 4.3 GPA.
The St. John's softball team will begin its quest for a second BIG EAST Championship in February.
