St. John’s men’s tennis readies for 26-match slate
QUEENS, N.Y.-Â The St. John's men's tennis team is set to retake the court for the spring season with 24 scheduled regular season contests, Head Coach Dillon Pottish announced Thursday.
The Red Storm is coming off a 16-2 record and BIG EAST title match appearance in 2021. The 88.9 percent win rate was the program's highest dating back to 2003.
After three competitions in the fall, the spring slate features 26 matches against opponents from 13 different conferences, including 23 non-conference schools and three BIG EAST foes.
The Johnnies will begin their season with two trips, first to Quinnipiac on Jan. 22 before heading to Poughkeepsie to face Marist and Army on Jan. 30. Then come six-consecutive home matches at the USTA National Tennis Center. The nearby indoor facility in Flushing, N.Y. will serve as St. John's home court until weather permits the Johnnies to play outdoors on campus. The lengthy home stand includes visits from Delaware (Feb. 3), Old Dominion (Feb. 6) Wagner and St. Francis Brooklyn (Feb. 10), Queens College (Feb.13) and concludes with Boston College on Feb. 18.
After the three-week stretch at home, St. John's will pay a visit to a strong Dartmouth squad on Feb. 25, before a trip to sunny Florida to face Florida Atlantic on March 3 and Florida Gulf Coast on March 5. The last time the Red Storm played those two schools consecutively it split with a 4-2 win over FAU and a 4-0 defeat at the hands of FGCU in January 2016.
Upon returning to the Northeast, the Red Storm will square off against Drexel at home on March 11. Just two days later it will strive for the program's first-ever victory at Cornell on March 13. Two matches back in Queens are next on the docket as Hofstra makes the short trip on March 16 before Boston University visits on March 19.
Four of the next five matches will come against Tri-State Area opponents. After a trip to Princeton on March 28, the Johnnies will welcome Fordham, NJIT and Sacred Heart during a loaded five-day stretch from April 2-6. A quick turnaround is in store as the Johnnies will head to Long Branch, N.J. to take on five-time reigning MAAC Champion Monmouth on April 7.
BIG EAST competition will commence on April 30 with a trip to face Villanova. After a busy non-conference stint, the next conference opponent is Marquette at home on April 9. The Johnnies have claimed victory in seven of their last eight matches with the Golden Eagles, including a 4-2 win in last season's BIG EAST semifinals.
The final non-conference match of the regular season will bring St. John's back to the City of Brotherly Love to meet Temple on April 13. The Red Storm defeated the Owls last year, 4-2, as returnees Charlie James and Giuseppe De Camelis each captured straight-set victories.
The regular season finale is set for April 15 in Washington when St. John's will play at Georgetown for the first time since 2013. The Red Storm has taken three out of its last four matches from the Hoyas.
The Johnnies will aim to capture their second BIG EAST title in their last three tries at the Cayce Tennis Center in South Carolina on April 22-24. The Johnnies fell just short of the title last year in a hard-fought 4-3 loss against DePaul in the championship match.
All match times will be announced at a later date and reflected on our website.
