The duo listed in the ITA rankings after reaching the semi-finals at Northeast Regionals
QUEENS, N.Y.- Senior Ignacio Garcia and junior Axel Vila Antuna were tabbed the No. 54 doubles team in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's culminating fall ranking.
The ITA released its top-125 singles players and the top-60 doubles teams on Tuesday as the fall season has drawn to a close. Garcia and Vila Antuna were the lone BIG EAST pair to make the list. DePaul's Marino Jakic was the only other conference representative, checking in as the No. 124 singles player.
The duo orchestrated an impressive fall campaign with a 6-2 doubles record, winning six of their last seven matches. At the ITA Northeast Regionals, Garcia and Vila Antuna claimed four victories over pairs from Yale, Dartmouth, Princeton and Buffalo. The upperclassmen propelled through the field of 68 teams to reach the semi-finals before falling to the tournament's eventual champions.Â
In their first time on the court together in mid-September, the duo strung together two wins at the Penn Invite. After an opening day loss, the Lamar transfer and 2021 BIG EAST First-Team selection found their stride dominating its next two opponents by a scoring margin of 12-2.Â
