Goalkeeper becomes program’s first All-American since 2008
QUEENS, N.Y. – One of the nation's top goalkeepers this season, redshirt junior Luka Gavran has been named to the United Soccer Coaches All-America Third Team, it was announced Thursday afternoon by the organization.
Â
Gavran, the BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year, becomes the first Johnnie to garner All-American honors from the national coaches' association since Joel Gustafsson in 2008. Gavran's selection marks the 15th time in program history that a member of the Red Storm has garnered All-American selection from United Soccer Coaches (formerly known as the National Soccer Coaches Association of America).
Â
This fall, Gavran started all 20 matches for the Red Storm, turning an 11-6-3 record with 12 shutouts, a 0.57 goals against average and an .844 save percentage. Through games played in the NCAA Quarterfinal, Gavran leads the nation in shutouts and save percentage while ranking third in goals against average.
Â
Gavran's 12 clean sheets are tied for third on the program's single-season record list in that category.   Â
Â
With Gavran anchoring the Red Storm's efforts in the defensive end of the pitch, St. John's went 11-6-3, including a 5-3-2 mark BIG EAST play. That effort helped the Red Storm finish third in a league that sent five teams to the NCAA Round of 32.
St. John's earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament for the 22nd time in program history and the second time in the last three seasons. The Red Storm defeated Princeton in the first round before falling to top-seeded Oregon State in the round of 32, marking the 14th time that St. John's has won at least one NCAA Tournament contest.
