St. John’s Welcomes Sacred Heart and Stony Brook for Two-Match Homestand

The Red Storm hosts Sacred Heart on Saturday for its home opener before taking on Stony Brook Sunday afternoon
QUEENS, N.Y. (Feb. 12, 2021) – The reigning BIG EAST Volleyball Champions will play its first matches inside Carnesecca Arena in over a year this weekend, as St. John's hosts Sacred Heart and Stony Brook for a two-match homestand.
The Johnnies welcome the Pioneers for their home opener this Saturday at 2 p.m. Audio streaming of the match will be available on redstormsports.com.
The Red Storm will cap off the weekend with a Sunday showdown against local foe Stony Brook at 2 p.m. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
St. John's (1-1) defeated Fordham in four sets to open the 2021 spring season before enduring a three-set loss to Temple on the road last weekend.
Junior outside hitter Efrosini Alexakou was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Tuesday after recording 29 kills across the Red Storm's two matches. Alexakou led the conference with 4.14 kills per set in the Johnnies' first week of action.
Maria Angelica Palacios currently ranks first in the BIG EAST with 1.86 blocks per set this season. The senior middle blocker registered a team-high nine blocks in the Red Storm's victory over the Rams and racked up four rejections against the Owls.
Senior setter Tiziana Baumrukova also sits on top of the conference leaderboard with 11 assists per set. Baumrukova dished out a combined 77 helpers in the Johnnies' 1-1 week.
Sacred Heart will play its first match of the 2021 spring season against St. John's this Saturday after posting a 20-12 (13-3 NEC) record in 2019.
The Pioneers secured their third Northeast Conference Championship in program history last season and were unanimously picked to win the conference in the 2020-21 NEC Preseason Coaches' Poll.
Sacred Heart returns junior setter Sarah Ciszek, who was named the 2019 NEC Setter of the Year after ranking second in the conference with 9.91 assists per game and fourth in the league with a .348 hitting percentage.
The Pioneers also welcome back junior libero Emma Smallcomb and sophomore middle blocker Reghan Palanchi. Smallcomb led the team with 3.72 digs per set in 2019, while Palanchi ranked seventh in the NEC with 0.87 blocks per set.
Stony Brook will also participate in its first match of the 2021 spring season against St. John's after finishing the 2019 season with a 9-17 (4-6 AE) record.
The Seawolves were picked to finish third in the America East Preseason Coaches' Poll and bring back 2019 America East Defensive Specialist of the Year, Kiani Kerstetter for her senior campaign.
Kerstetter led the America East with 4.29 digs per set last season.
The Johnnies own a 16-2 all-time record against the Seawolves. The last meeting between the two programs took place in the fall of 2019 when St. John's swept Stony Brook in Tallahassee, Fla., at the Seminole Invitational.
