Red Storm moves to 14-10 on the season
VILLANOVA, Pa. – After upending the then-No. 3/3 Wildcats 20 days ago at Carnesecca Arena, the St. John's men's basketball team fell short of a season sweep on Wednesday at Finneran Pavilion, losing to No. 8/6 Villanova, 81-58.
Julian Champagnie led the way offensively, scoring 16 points and grabbing seven boards. Champagnie, the leading scorer in the BIG EAST, has now reached double figures in 29 consecutive regular season games dating back to last season.
Isaih Moore was perfect from inside the 3-point arc and 4-for-5 overall, finishing the game with 10 points in 13 minutes of action.
Posh Alexander exited the game in the final minutes with an injury to his right hand. The four-time BIG EAST Freshman of the Week had four points, two assists and two steals.
As a team, St. John's shot just 36.2 percent (21-of-58) from the field and 13.0 percent (3-of-23) from deep. The Red Storm's 58 points were a season low.
Villanova found it hard to miss in the early going while St. John's had trouble hitting much of anything. The Wildcats sank five of their first seven threes while the Red Storm missed its first five. Beginning at the 13:13 mark of the half, Villanova made eight straight, opening up a 31-14 lead with 8:46 to go.
From there, Villanova went more than five minutes without a field goal, but the Johnnies were only able to cut the deficit to 13, as St. John's went 2-for7 during that same stretch.
The Red Storm fell behind by as many as 20 in the opening half before taking a 17-point deficit, 42-25, into the locker room.
That was as close as the Johnnies would get the rest of the way, as Villanova led by as many as 26 down the stretch.
St. John's is currently scheduled for an eight-day break before its next game, as the Johnnies will kick off a two-game homestand to finish the regular season on March 3 against Providence. Tip-off from Carnesecca Arena is set for 7 p.m. on CBS Sports Network.
