The two teams will meet again on April 3 at Belson Stadium
Wrapping up its two-game road swing on Sunday afternoon at No. 16/25 Georgetown, the St. John's women's soccer team fell to the Hoyas at Shaw Field by a score of 1-0.
Naya Lipkens, who was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday, proved outstanding for the Red Storm despite picking up the loss. The Bloomfield, Conn., native made four saves on the afternoon, including a diving stop on a penalty kick in the 48th minute.
Sophomore Jessica Garziano and freshman Ava Collins each tallied a shot for the Red Storm.
Sofia Fox scored the game-winning goal for Georgetown in the 36th minute off an assist from Gia Vicari.
A little over a minute later, Garziano registered the Red Storm's lone chance in the opening half. The Melville, N.Y., native sent a powerful shot towards the top of the cage, but her attempt sailed just over the crossbar.
At the intermission, the Hoyas held a decisive advantage in shots, firing off six to the Red Storm's one.
Three minutes into the second half, it looked as if Georgetown would blow the game open thanks to a foul call in the box against a St. John's player. On the ensuing penalty kick, Grace Nguyen sent a powerful strike to her left side, but Lipkens made a diving stop to keep the Red Storm within one.
Lipkens came up big for the Johnnies three more times over the remainder of the game, turning aside a trio of Georgetown's attempts on target.
With 23 minutes to play in regulation, Collins would fire off the Johnnies' final chance of the game but the New Zealand, native saw her shot blocked.
The Johnnies will return to action on Thursday afternoon at Belson Stadium, hosting Providence. The contest is set for a 3 p.m. start.
