3/20/2021 1:15:00 PM | Women's Soccer
The Johnnies and Wildcats will kick off at 3 p.m. on Nova Nation All-Access
After seeing its Thursday match against Providence postponed due to a COVID-19 protocols, the St. John's women's soccer team returns to the pitch on Sunday, traveling to Villanova for a 3 p.m. contest with the Wildcats.
The meeting between St. John's (5-2, 2-2 BIG EAST) and Villanova (2-6-1, 1-3-1 BIG EAST) will be broadcast live on Nova Nation All-Access.
Following five-straight victories to open the 2021 campaign, the Red Storm dropped back-to-back contests on the road last week. The Johnnies fell 1-0 to Connecticut on March 11 before suffering a 1-0 setback at the hands of then-no. 16/25 Georgetown on March 14.
Despite suffering her first two losses of the season, Naya Lipkens tallied a combined seven saves over the Johnnies' two-game road swing. Last Sunday, Lipkens proved outstanding against the nationally ranked Hoyas. The Bloomfield, Conn., native turned aside four of Georgetown's shots on target, including a diving stop on a penalty kick in the 48th minute.
Sunday will mark the 29th all-time meeting between St. John's and Villanova and the second matchup this season. In the two programs first outing, freshman Frederique St.-Jean converted on a header in the 100th minute of action to push the Johnnies past the Wildcats, 1-0. The victory marked Red Storm's third-straight overtime win against Villanova.
The Wildcats enter Sunday's contest with an overall record of 2-6-1, including a 1-3-1 mark in conference play. Villanova is coming off its first BIG EAST win of the season, downing Seton Hall, 2-1, in double overtime on Thursday. After trailing the Pirates, 1-0, early in the second half, the Wildcats mounted a comeback. Sophomore Sophia Kryza converted on the game winner in the 102nd minute to secure the win.
Leading Villanova offensively this season is the trio of Kryza, Chloe O'Neill and Sam Rosette, as all three Wildcats have found the back of the net this season. Two Wildcats have split time between the pipes this year, as Megan McClay has seen action in eight games, while Maria Thomas has played in three. The duo has stopped a combined 56 looks on goal this season.
Following Thursday's contest with Villanova, the Red Storm will travel to South Orange, N.J., on March 25 for a 6 p.m. meeting with the Seton Hall Pirates.
