Williams, Earlington, Roberts and McGriff will explore transfer opportunities
QUEENS, N.Y. – Four St. John's men's basketball players entered their names into the NCAA Transfer Portal this week, as Greg Williams Jr., Marcellus Earlington, Josh Roberts and John McGriff will explore possible opportunities at other institutions.
"We thank Greg, John, Josh and Marcellus for all of their contributions to the St. John's basketball program and wish them nothing but the best," said St. John's Head Coach Mike Anderson. "They represented our University well and played key roles in the success we had the past two seasons."
Williams, a native of Lafayette, La., played in 83 games and made 29 starts in three seasons at St. John's. Williams recently completed a campaign as a junior, ranking third on the team with 9.5 points per outing. He led the squad and ranked fourth in the BIG EAST shooting 44.8 percent from beyond the arc and finished seventh in the conference with 1.3 steals per contest. Williams, despite being limited at times with a back injury, reached double figures 12 times in 24 chances, including a pair of 20-point performances.
Earlington appeared in all 27 games for the Red Storm this past season, making one start and scoring in double figures eight times. He averaged 6.8 points and 4.1 rebounds, which ranked seventh and third on the team, respectively, in 16.9 minutes per game. The Stony Point, N.Y., native shot 40.3 percent from beyond the arc, good enough for eighth in the BIG EAST in that category.
Roberts, a three-year letterwinner in Queens, will explore transfer opportunities after averaging 2.6 points and 2.7 rebounds in 10.7 minutes per game as a junior in 2020-21. The 6-foot-9 forward, who appeared in 25 of the team's 27 games and made 17 starts, shot a team-high 64.4 percent from the floor on the season. His best offensive effort of the campaign came in the team's win over Butler on Jan. 12, when he tallied season highs of eight points and 23 minutes played against the Bulldogs. A presence on the defensive end of the floor, Roberts ranked second on the team with 19 blocks.
McGriff, who spent the last two seasons with the Red Storm, missed all of the 2019-20 campaign with injury before appearing in 18 contests as a redshirt freshman this past year. His best outing of the season came in a win over Stony Brook on Dec. 6, when McGriff scored five points and dished out four assists in 14 minutes of action.
St. John's went 16-11 this past season with a 10-9 record in league play, the team's best mark in BIG EAST action since 2014-15. Predicted to place ninth in a preseason poll of the league's coaches, St. John's finished in fourth and earned its highest BIG EAST Tournament seed since 2000. Anderson was named the BIG EAST Coach of the Year, becoming just the third coach in program history and the first St. John's head man in three decades to earn the honor.
