Kajan secures the ninth game-winning goal of her Red Storm career
Redshirt senior Zsani Kajan recorded her second goal of the season on Sunday afternoon, scoring six minutes into the first overtime period to lift the St. John's women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Seton Hall at Belson Stadium.
With the win over the Pirates, the Red Storm locked in its second-straight overtime victory, improving to 5-0-0 on the season and 2-0-0 in conference action.
After firing off a game-high four shots in regulation, Kajan needed just one attempt in the overtime period. The Budapest, Hungary, native struck in the 96th minute to lock in the victory for the Red Storm. The effort marked the ninth game-winning goal of Kajan's career and bumped her overall score total to 26.
Senior Maia Cabrera, who netted the equalizer in the 43rd minute for St. John's, assisted on Kajan's golden goal. Cabrera's tally in the first quarter, marked her second goal of the season and the third of her Red Storm career.
Naya Lipkens, who was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday, picked up her fifth win in as many games this season.
As a team, St. John's (5-0-0, 2-0-0 BIG EAST) outshot the Pirates (1-2-0, 0-2-0 BIG EAST) by a 12-4 margin with five attempts on goal. The Johnnies also earned nine corner kicks to Seton Halls' none.
After falling behind 1-0 in the 30th minute off a goal from Seton Hall's Laura Hooper, Grace Paradis had a chance to tie the game for St. John's, but her attempt took a right turn.
Nine minutes later, Cabrera made a spectacular play, as the Rego Park, N.Y., native dribbled around her defender before firing a shot toward the top of the cage. Her shot bounced off the woodwork and into the back of the net for the equalizer.
St. John's continued to dominate possession in the second half, firing off six shots that missed the mark.
With six minutes gone in overtime, Cabrera sent a long pass up to Kajan who buried it home from 10-yards out to secure the win.
St. John's will return to action on Thursday, as the team travels to Dillon Stadium for a 2 p.m. matchup with the University of Connecticut
