The Johnnies and Huskies will kick off a 2 p.m.
Coming off a pair of overtime victories against BIG EAST foes, the St. John's women's soccer team will look to remain unbeaten this season as the Johnnies travel to Storrs., Conn., for a Thursday afternoon matchup with the University of Connecticut.
Following its win over Seton Hall on Sunday afternoon, the talented Red Storm squad is off to the program's best start since 2013. That year, St. John's began the season 6-0 before reaching the second round of the national tournament for the first time in program history.
With a combined 13 goals through five games this season, the Johnnies sit second overall in the BIG EAST and are just four tallies shy of passing their 2019 mark. Five of those goals have come off the foot of sophomore Jessica Garziano. The Melville, N.Y., native recorded her first career hat trick in the second game of the season to lift St. John's (5-0-0, 2-0-0 BIG EAST) past Sacred Heart, 3-0.
Zsani Kajan, the 2021 BIG EAST Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, has accounted for two goals the season. Most recently, the Budapest, Hungary, native netted a golden goal to help St. John's past Seton Hall, 2-1, on Sunday. This marked the ninth game-winning goal of Kajan's career bumping her overall total to 26. Kajan also picked up an assist last week for St. John's to earn BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week before finding a spot on the TopDrawerSoccer Team of the Week.
Five other Johnnies have scored for St. John's this season as Maia Cabrera, Ava Collins, Frederique St.-Jean, Brooke Boyd and Addison Hornsey have each found the back of the net. Cabrera has tallied a pair of goals for the Red Storm this year with her most recent goal coming against Seton Hall on Sunday.
Goalkeeper Naya Lipkens, who was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday for the second-straight week, has picked up five wins in as many games this season. The Bloomfield, Conn., native is boasting a 0.44 goals against average entering Thursday's match with UConn.
The Red Storm and the Huskies (2-1-1, 0-1-1 BIG EAST), who spent the last seven seasons in the American Athletic Conference before rejoining the BIG EAST this summer, will meet for the first time in four years. In the two teams last matchup, St. John's took a 1-0 victory behind a goal from former St. John's standout Christina Bellero.
UConn enters Thursday's match boasting a record of 2-1-1, including a 0-1-1 mark in conference action. In the Huskies' most recent game on March 7, UConn was held to a scoreless draw against Villanova. Connecticut outshot the Wildcats, 30-3, but were unable to find the back of the net.
Freshman Lucy Cappadona and senior Sophia Danyko-Kulchycky have each recorded a team-high two goals for the Huskies this season. Redshirt junior Kess Elmore has also found the back of the net for UConn this year.
