Men’s Golf Concludes Day One at the Connecticut Cup

Junior Tyler Gerbavsits leads the Red Storm and is tied for fourth after opening round
The St. John's men's golf team shot a 15-over 303 to finish fifth after the opening round of the Connecticut Cup on Thursday.
Junior Tyler Gerbavsits produced the Johnnies' best round of the day, firing a 1-over 73 to close out play in a three-way tie for fourth. Gerbavsits turned in an even-par 36 on his opening nine holes, before closing out play with a 37 (+1) on the back nine. The Huntington, N.Y., native fired off a pair of birdies on the par-5 second and 13th holes.
Behind Gerbavsits, classmate Jack Simon signed off on a 74 on the day. The junior from Sparta, N.J., drained a trio of birdies over the first 18 holes. Sophmore Alex Kyriacou wrapped up play one stroke back of Simon, turning a 75 on the afternoon.
Sophomore Ryan Rittberger and junior Joseph Busiello rounded out scoring for the Red Storm's lineup, carding an 81 and 84, respectively.
Freshman Doug Beney, who is competing as an individual this week, drained a team-high four birdies on the day to finish with a score of 77.
The Red Storm will resume play at the Ellington Ridge Country Club tomorrow. Live results will be available throughout the day via Golfstat and will be posted to RedStormSports.com at the conclusion of the round.
