Red Storm senior went 2-0 last week
QUEENS, N.Y. – St. John's men's tennis senior Ignacio Garcia earned BIG EAST Tennis Player of the Week honors for his performance last week, the conference announced late Thursday afternoon.
Garcia went 2-0 in his singles matches on the No. 2 court against Queens College and Boston University in a week that saw the Red Storm go 2-0 as well. Garcia dominated his match last Tuesday against Queens College, winning in straight sets, 6-0 and 6-0. On Sunday against the Terriers, the San Juan, Puerto Rico native also prevailed, 6-0 and 6-1.
Additionally, in doubles play, Garcia paired up with Giuseppe De Camelis to win their bout against Queens, 6-3, before the two took Sunday's bout against BU, 7-6, in a tiebreaker.
The Red Storm senior has been a key cog for a Johnnies team that has now started the 2021 campaign a perfect 10-0. Garcia is undefeated in singles play, boasting a 6-0 record, including a 5-0 mark in that No. 2 singles slot. Additionally, he and De Camelis have paired to go 4-1 in doubles play on the No. 1 court.
Dating back to last spring, Garcia is 16-2 in singles play. This is the second time that the Red Storm senior has won the award during his time in Queens, as he was also named BIG EAST Player of the Week back on Feb. 25 of last season.
The Johnnies will be back in action this Saturday when they take on Monmouth at 1 p.m. at the St. John's Tennis Courts.
