Red Storm catcher takes home the award for the first time in her career
QUEENS, N.Y. – Kaitlin Mattera was named BIG EAST Player of the Week following her strong showing at Creighton this weekend, the conference announced Monday afternoon.
Mattera went 8-12 (.666) at the plate against Creighton which was good enough to lead the BIG EAST last week. The Red Storm catcher also finished second in the conference in slugging percentage (1.250), on base percentage (.692) and home runs (2). Mattera tallied 15 total bases and scored three runs over the weekend.
In game one of the team's doubleheader on Saturday, the Coventry, R.I., native was locked in, going 3-4 and adding a double to go along with one of her two home runs, which proved to be the game-winning run in the team's 3-2 victory. In game two, Mattera collected three more hits while slugging another home run in game three on Sunday.
With eight hits over the weekend, Mattera is now just seven away from career hit number 150 with plenty of games remaining to get there in her final campaign as a member of the Red Storm.
The honor is the first of Mattera's Red Storm career. Previously, she had been recognized by the conference four times, as she was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll in each of her freshman, sophomore and junior campaigns. Mattera becomes the third Red Storm player to earn the honor in the last six weeks, as Gretchen Bowie took the award home on March 22, as did Marissa Rizzi on March 8.
The Red Storm will be back in action this Thursday when it travels to Hempstead for a nonconference tilt with Hofstra. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
