Sophomore earned three singles victories in as many Red Storm wins
QUEENS, N.Y. – St. John's sophomore Giuseppe De Camelis was named BIG EAST Men's Tennis Player of the Week after earning three singles victories in as many matches, the conference announced Wednesday afternoon.
De Camelis won all three of his contests played on the No. 4 court a week ago, earning victories over Temple, Fordham and NJIT. All three of those wins were crucial for the Red Storm, who went 3-0 a week ago to close out the regular season.
The Red Storm sophomore faced his toughest test of the week on Tuesday against the Owls, where he won in three sets, taking the first, 6-0, and the third, 6-2. On Saturday against Fordham, De Camelis won easily in straight sets, 6-0 and 6-2, while closing out the regular season with a victory, 6-4 and 7-5, over NJIT.
The three victories brought De Camelis' record on the season to 12-1, as the only loss he suffered in 2021 came back on April 3 against Monmouth. The Trani, Italy, native enters the BIG EAST Tennis Championships riding a four-match winning streak since that defeat. Overall, De Camelis is 25-5 over his first two seasons in Queens.
De Camelis and the Johnnies will be back in action this Friday when they take on Xavier in the BIG EAST Tennis Championships quarterfinal round. The match is set to get underway at 1 p.m. down in Cayce, S.C.
