Red Storm catcher honored by the conference for the second time in three weeks
QUEENS, N.Y. – Kaitlin Mattera was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for her performance over the Red Storm's five games a week ago, the conference announced on Monday afternoon.
The graduate student went 5-14 at the plate (.357) over the four BIG EAST matchups that she appeared in for the Johnnies, including hitting at a .455 clip against the first-place Villanova Wildcats over the weekend. Mattera went for nine total bases throughout the week, tallying a double, home run and three RBIs against Villanova.
Mattera, who was named BIG EAST Player of the Week two weeks ago, recorded a hit in each of the team's three games against Villanova this weekend. In game one of Saturday's doubleheader, she went 2-4 with two singles. In the second half of the twin bill, she recorded a double in the first inning which marked her 150th career hit as she then came around to score. She followed that up with a three-run blast to right-center field the next inning. The Red Storm catcher also recorded a hit on Sunday.
In addition to her offense, Mattera caught three games for the Red Storm a week ago, nabbing a Villanova runner stealing and teaming up with Elyse Morris to cut down a runner at home plate on Sunday.
Mattera has been on fire of late, hitting safely in eight of the team's last nine contests and raising her average to .354 which ranks third on the team.
This marks the sixth time in the graduate catcher's decorated Red Storm career that she has been honored by the BIG EAST with a weekly award. Mattera joins Erin Brown and Marissa Rizzi as the other two Johnnies who have found their way onto the honor roll this season.
