Red Storm offense held to three runs over the twin bill
INDIANAPOLIS, IN. – The St. John's softball team fell in both games of its doubleheader at Butler on Saturday afternoon, 4-1 and 8-2.
The Red Storm (7-11, 4-7 BIG EAST) were swept in the series after dropping Friday's contest to the Bulldogs (13-14, 5-7 BIG EAST) as well by a score of 3-1. St. John's held a lead early in the game in each contest, but Butler rallies erased each deficit.
The Johnnies recorded seven hits over the afternoon's two games as Kaitlin Mattera and Kaitlyn Lologo each recorded multiple base knocks. Mattera went 2-2 in game two as did Lologo, who picked up an RBI. Mattera drove in the team's lone run in game one with a first inning double that plated Gretchen Bowie.
Game One
For the second game in a row, the Red Storm offense scored in the first inning as after Peyton Cody walked with two outs, Mattera stepped up to the plate and delivered an RBI double into left-center field to give the Johnnies the lead, 1-0.
The Bulldogs had some first inning offense of their own, however, as a walk from starter Kayla Kmett (4-5) followed by three consecutive singles gave Butler a lead they wouldn't relinquish, 2-1, after the opening frame.
Kmett would settle in after a rocky first and give the Red Storm some quality innings, as she allowed just two hits from the second through fifth frames and did not allow a Butler runner to cross home plate. The Red Storm senior ran into a bit of trouble in the sixth, as she was relieved by Angela Saric while the Bulldogs tacked on two insurance runs, making it 4-1.
Offensively, the Red Storm was slowed by Butler lefthander Alyssa Graves (4-4) all afternoon, as it had just one hit after the Mattera double off the bat of Marissa Rizzi in the third inning. Graves struck out four and walked three as the lefthander did not surrender a hit over the final four innings of the game en route to the complete game victory, 4-1.
Game Two
Erin Brown (2-5) got the start for the Red Storm after her strong outing in game one on Friday afternoon despite the loss. Following a scoreless first inning, it was the Johnnies offense that broke through first for the third straight game. Mattera singled to lead off the inning and after two strikeouts, Elyse Morris reached on an error before Lologo singled up the middle to plate pinch-runner Meisha Murray and give the Red Storm the lead, 1-0.
After the Red Storm got the offense started, the game became a pitching duel between Brown and Bulldogs starter Mackenzie Griman for a few innings. The St. John's sophomore surrendered one hit over the first four innings, allowing just four Butler runners to reach base as the Johnnies held on to a 1-0 lead.
Things would unravel for the Red Storm in the home half of the fifth, as Butler hung an eight spot on the board behind five hits and three walks with 11 batters coming to the plate in the inning. Brown, Kmett and Saric all pitched in the frame before Saric was able to shut the door on the rally for Butler, as they grabbed an 8-1 advantage.
The Johnnies added a run in the sixth, as a Melanie Santos ground ball plated Carolyn Von Werne's first collegiate run to bring the score to 8-2. The game was called in the bottom half of the inning due to St. John's plans for a return flight to New York, as Butler took game three, 8-2, to sweep the series.
Next up on the schedule for the Red Storm is another road BIG EAST series, as it will travel to Omaha, Neb. next weekend for a three-game set with Creighton.
