Alex Kyriacou earns medalist honors with a score of 1-under 70
The St. John's men's golf team captured its second team title of the season on Monday at the Red Storm Invitational.
As a team, St. John's turned in a combined score 294 to sit 19 strokes ahead of second-place Iona. Manhattan College and Hofstra rounded out the field, turning in scores of 322 and 326 at the 18-hole event.
"It was great to see us bounce back from last week's tournament and get a team win today at the second annual Red Storm Invitational," said Head Coach Mal Galletta. "I'd like to thank Engineers Country Club for hosting our event. The guys played some good golf in difficult conditions. I am happy for Alex on earning his second individual title of the season. We are looking forward to getting back on the course tomorrow for our match with Iona."
Sophomore Alex Kyriacou earned medalist honors for the second time this season, carding a 1-under 70 on the day. The Suffern, N.Y., native drained a tournament-best six birdies on the afternoon, including three-straight on the par-4 six, seven and eight holes.
"I missed it in the right places today," said Kyriacou. "I held it together on the front nine and then a few putts dropped on the back nine."
Kyriacou was one of four Johnnies to finish in the top five, as junior Jack Simon and Freshman Doug Beney tied for second, each carding a 74 on the day. Junior Tyler Gerbavsits sat two strokes back of Simon and Beney, signing off on a 76 to tie for fifth.
Gage Wolfle and Joseph Busiello rounded out scoring for the Red Storm, turning in scores of 78 and 83, respectively.
St. John's will return to action tomorrow, as the squad hosts local foe Iona in a dual match at Spook Rock Golf Course in Suffern, N.Y. The two teams will tee off at 1:30 p.m.
