Red Storm falls in six innings in doubleheader moved to one game due to lightning
NEWARK, Del. - The St. John's softball team fell to Delaware, 8-0, in six innings in its season finale on Saturday afternoon. The two programs were originally scheduled to play a doubleheader at the Delaware Softball Diamond, but lightning delays throughout game one forced the second contest to be canceled.
The Red Storm (10-21, 7-14 BIG EAST) and Blue Hens (22-7, 9-5 CAA) played through rain and two lightning delays during game one, which lasted nearly four hours from start to finish. Due to the delays, a lack of light at the field forced a cancelation of the second contest of the twin bill.
The Johnnies staggred three hits over the six innings of softball against Delaware starter Sarah Piening. Kaitlin Mattera reached twice, once with a single and the other time via a hit by pitch, in what was her final collegiate game. Juniors Peyton Cody and Meisha Murray had the other two hits for the Red Storm in its final contest of 2021.
Erin Brown (4-10) got the start for the Red Storm and the Blue Hens took advantage of a couple of errors to get two runs on the board. Hanna Garber led off the home half of the first with a triple before a walk and two errors helped Delaware take the 2-0 lead to the second.
After a double off the bat of Cody, her fourth hit in the last two games, led off the road half of the second, the Red Storm went down in order. The Blue Hens then used a single and double with two outs in the home half of the frame to extend their lead to 3-0.
The third inning was quiet for both teams, as the Red Storm went down in order and a Blue Hens leadoff walk was erased by a double play started by Brown. In the fourth, Mattera led off the inning with a single that was also erased by a double play from the Blue Hens. With Delaware leading 3-0 in the middle of the fourth, the game was delayed nearly an hour due to lightning.
Following the delay, the Blue Hens bats continued to grow their lead in the bottom of the fourth. A double from Julz Garber, who had three hits on the day, led off the inning and two groundouts scored her from second. At the end of four, the Red Storm trailed, 4-0, when another delay of about an hour took place.
In the road half of the fifth, Kalei Sorensen led off with a walk which was again erased by a double play ball. Kayla Kmett would come on to pitch for Brown in the bottom of the fifth and struck out the first hitter she faced but reached on a wild pitch. Kmett threw three wild pitches total and walked four in the inning, allowing a hit as well, as the Blue Hens grabbed three runs to take a 7-0 advantage into the sixth.
The Johnnies had their best chance to grab some offense against Blue Hens starter Sarah Piening (3-0) in the top of the sixth, as Murray led off the frame with a single which was followed up by a walk for Camryn Steele. Piening locked in from there, however, notching two of her four strikeouts on the day to retire the side.
Needing just one run in the sixth to end the game, the Blue Hens got a single with two outs, followed up by a walk and double off the bat of Julz Garber to end the game and lift the home team to an 8-0 win.
The Red Storm did not qualify for the BIG EAST Tournament for the first time since 2013 as its season has now come to an end. DePaul, Villanova, Connecticut and Butler will square off for an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament next weekend in Storrs.
