8/21/2021 11:52:00 AM | Women's Soccer
The Johnnies and Hawks will kick off at 1 p.m. on ESPN+
Fresh off a 3-0 victory at Belson Stadium to open up the 2021 campaign, the St. John's women's soccer team will travel to The City of Brotherly Love for a Sunday afternoon matchup against Saint Joseph's.
First kick is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Sweeney Field and will be streamed live on ESPN+.
St. John's enters the contest with a record of 1-0-0 after taking down NJIT, 3-0, in its season opener on Aug. 19. Zsani Kajan, the Preseason BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year, scored a pair of goals for the Johnnies, finding the back of the net in the 35th and 79th minutes. With two scores against the Highlanders, the Budapest, Hungary, bumped her career total to 30 goals, moving into fourth on the Red Storm's all-time scoring list. The brace also marked the seventh multi-goal outing of Kajan's collegiate career.
Kajan was one of two Johnnies to earn Preseason All-BIG EAST recognition this spring, as Jessica Garziano also found a spot on the early season all-league team. Garziano, the Red Storm's leading scorer from the spring 2021 campaign, wasted no time getting her name on the score sheet, converting on the game-winning tally in the 26th minute for the Red Storm.
Returning goalkeeper Naya Lipkens picked up her first clean sheet of the season against NJIT. The Bloomfield, Conn., native played all 90 minutes between the pipes for the home team, making a pair of saves to secure the win.
Under the direction of head coach Jess Mannella, Saint Joseph's is in search of its first win of the season after falling to Towson, 3-0, on Thursday evening.
The Hawks return a veteran heavy squad, welcoming back 10 starters from a season ago, including their leading scorer Izzy Greene. The senior forward tallied a team-high four goals for Saint Joseph's last year.
Sunday will mark the fifth all-time meeting between St. John's and Saint Joseph's, with the Red Storm leading the series, 3-1. It has been over a decade since the Johnnies and the Hawks last played each other. The two teams most recent matchup was a 1-0 victory in favor of the Red Storm in 2006.
First kick is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Sweeney Field and will be streamed live on ESPN+.
