Simon Tied for First After Day One of The Doc Gimmler

St. John’s in fifth after 36 holes
Jack Simon, who captured the individual title at The Doc Gimmler in the spring, sits in a tie for first with Yale's Sho Wai Wu following two rounds of action.
Simon opened up the day with an 1-over 71 before shooting a 67 over the final 18 holes to climb 15 spots. The Sparta, N.J., native drained a combined seven birdies on the day.
Ryan Rittberger and Doug Beney, who was competing as an individual, both signed off on a 1-under 69 each over the first 18. Beney's early-round performance was highlighted by four birdies, while Rittberger drained three. The duo each signed off on a 72 for the latter round to sit in a tie for 11th overall.
Gage Wolfle put forth a stellar first-round effort, draining seven birdies for a career-best 6-under 64. The Sewell, N.J., native's low-round effort is tied with teammate Rittberger and former St. John's standout Gerald Mackedon for the best round ever by a St. John's golfer at The Doc Gimmler. Wolfle shot a 79 over the last 18 holes to close out the day in a tie for 20th.
Tyler Gerbavsits, who was slotted as the no. 3 golfer, turned in a pair of 73s on the day. The Huntington, N.Y., native's day one showing was highlighted by two birdies on the par-4 eighth and par-5 16th holes.
Freshman Peicheng Chen finished two-strokes back of Gerbavsits with a score of 77-71-148. Classmate Thomas Stafford, who was competing as an individual, signed off on a 73-78-151.
Joseph Busiello rounded out scoring for the five-man lineup, turning in scores of 77 and 76, respectively.
As a team, the Red Storm shot a combined 573 to rank fifth overall in the team standings.
The Red Storm will resume play at Bethpage State Park Red Course tomorrow. Live results will be available throughout the day via Golfstat and will be posted to RedStormSports.com at the conclusion of the round.
