Jack Simon leads St. John’s and finishes in a tie for third
Behind a strong individual performance by Jack Simon, the St. John's men's golf team finished in a tie for fourth at The Doc Gimmler.
Simon opened up play on Saturday with a two-round score of 2-under 138, highlighted by a 67 over the final 18 holes. The Sparta, N.J., native kicked off the final round on Sunday with a bogey-free front nine that included a birdie on the par-4 eighth hole. The senior turned in a final-round level par to finish in a five-way tie for third.
Ryan Rittberger also shot an even-par 70 on the day to wrap up the three-round invitational in a tie for 10th. Rittberger saw his best effort of the weekend come in the opening round as the junior shot a season best 1-under 69.
As a team, St. John's closed out action with three-round 851 to finish in a tie for fourth with Yale and sith just six-strokes back of first-place Columbia.
"We had a really good final round, but just came up short," said Head Coach Mal Galletta. "This was a very competitive field and to have five players finish in the top-20 against such strong competition is quite an achievement."
Tyler Gerbavsits and Doug Beney, who was competing as an individual, both recorded three round scores of 213. Gerbavsits registered his best round on Sunday, as the senior turned in a 3-under 67. He opened up the day with a bogey-free front nine featured by a trio of birdies to make the turn at 3-under. The Huntington, N.Y., native added two more birdies on the par-4 14th and par-5 16th holes.
Gage Wolfle, who also competed as an individual, finished one-stroke back of Gerbavsits and Beney with a three-round score of 214. Wolfle's best finish came in round one, as the Sewell, N.J., native drained seven birdies for a career and tournament-best 6-under 64.
Peicheng Chen, who placed second overall in his first collegiate event last weekend, wrapped up play with scores of 77-71-71.
Joseph Busiello and Thomas Stafford, who was playing as an individual, rounded out scoring each shooting 227 over 54 holes.
The Red Storm will return to action on Sept. 19, with a trip to Annapolis, Md., for Match Play by the Bay with Navy.
