The Johnnies have won three of their last four at Belson Stadium
QUEENS, N.Y.- The St. John's men's soccer team will wrap a five-game homestand when it welcomes longtime local rival Columbia to Belson Stadium on Monday night. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m. on FloSports, a streaming service that requires a subscription to watch.
The Johnnies are set to host the Lions on the heels of back-to-back one-goal wins against Fordham and Boston University. On Monday night, Andrew Bennett's 11th minute goal proved to be the difference maker in a 1-0 win against the Rams, who went undefeated during the 2020-21 regular season before losing to eventual national champion Marshall in the NCAA Tournament. On Friday against the Terriers, Einar Lye scored twice in the opening 12 minutes of action. BU eventually came back to force overtime, but the Johnnies secured the win just 22 seconds into the extra period, as Wesley Leggett drew a foul in the box before Brandon Knapp converted on the ensuing penalty kick.
Quick and unselfish ball movement played a key role in the Red Storm's 2-0-0 week, as all three of the Red Storm's non-penalty-kick goals featured a pair of assists. Knapp and Lucas Bartlett assisted on Bennett's game-winner against the Rams. A few days later, it was Bennett and Knapp who set up Lye's first goal against BU before Bartlett and Adrian Roseth picked up the helpers on the latter half of Lye's brace.
Knapp, who split his time mostly between defensive midfield and center back during his first three years with the program, has been the Red Storm's primary offensive engine this season. Through five games, the senior has two goals, both of which have been game-winners, and four assists. His four helpers in five matches equal his assist total from the first 44 appearances of his St. John's career. Knapp's newfound offensive expertise has helped ease the absence of Knapp's classmate Tani Oluwaseyi, the 2019 BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year and two-time First Team All-BIG EAST selection who is expected to miss the entire season with injury.
The Johnnies have been getting off to quick starts so far in 2021, scoring first and in the opening 25 minutes in four of their five matches. Since 2010, St. John's is 91-8-7 when finding the back of the net before its opponent.
Columbia, which did not compete during the 2020-21 academic year, comes to Queens with a record of 1-1-1 on the young campaign. The Lions opened with a 2-0 win over George Washington at home before dropping a 1-0 decision at Stony Brook. In its most recent outing against Manhattan, Columbia played the Jaspers to a 2-2 draw.
Four different Lions have found the back of the net so far this fall. Ryan Kipness and Jake Novoshelski have each tallied a goal and an assist while Bryan Cosman and Will Todd have added single markers.
Three different goalkeepers have played at least 45 minutes for the Lions. Matthew Goodman started and played the full 110 minutes against Manhattan after Michael Collodi received the starting nod in the team's first two matches.
The two traditional college soccer powers in New York City, St. John's and Columbia will meet for the 10th time in the history of the two programs on Monday night.
The Red Storm went 0-7-0 against the Lions in the 1980s, a decade that saw Columbia win seven Ivy League Championships and finish as the national runner-up in 1983.
Since resuming the series in 2012 after a 23-year-pause, the Johnnies have outscored the Lions, 8-2, in a pair of wins. During their last meeting in 2019, St. John's and Columbia were scoreless at the intermission before the Red Storm exploded for five second-half goals in a 5-1 victory at Commisso Soccer Stadium.
