Red Storm to face off against three New York foes
QUEENS, N.Y. (Sept. 2, 2021) – The St. John's volleyball team will continue its 2021 campaign in Albany on Friday morning, taking on three New York teams at the Crowne Plaza Albany - The Desmond Hotel Volleyball Classic.
The Red Storm will start the tournament against host UAlbany at 11 a.m. at SEFCU Arena. The Johnnies will then take on Cornell the same day at 4 p.m. before closing things out against Colgate the following day at 4 p.m. All the matchups this weekend will have live stats available on UAlbanySports.com. In addition, UAlbany will live stream all the matches and the links will be made available day of on the volleyball schedule page of RedStormSports.com
The Johnnies (0-3) enter the tournament hoping to capture their first wins of the season. The Red Storm fell to No. 12 Penn State, UCF, and No. 24 Georgia Tech this past weekend. Rachele Rastelli led the team offensively, notching 27 kills on the weekend and logging 31.5 points. Freshman Georgia Walther posted six kills in the match against Georgia to record a .429 hitting percentage.
Albany enters its home tournament coming off a 3-1 win at Marist. The Great Danes, who are currently 2-2, were chosen to finish first in the America East Preseason Poll.
AVCA Honorable Mention All-American Kamara Kelly led the America East with 200.5 points last year and ranked top five for kills per set and digs. The junior was also named America East Player of the Year and named to the AVCA East All Region team. Alongside Kelly, UAlbany returns Charlotte Macken and Danielle Tedesco. Macken was named the conference Defensive Specialist of the Year after notching a league-high 208 digs. Tedesco was named to the First Team All-Conference for the second straight year after tying for conference lead in hitting percentage (.351) and recording 44 blocks and 118 kills on the season.
The all-time series between the Red Storm and the Great Danes is currently tied at 2-2. Both of St. John's wins have come on UAlbany's home court.
Cornell returns to the court this weekend for the first time since 2019. The Bears have been chosen third in the conference preseason poll, aligning with their third-place finish in 2019.
Cornell returns Jillienne Bennett who was named to the All-Ivy First Team in 2019. Alongside Bennett is Madison Baptiste, a second team All-Ivy player. Bennett and Baptiste will lead the way for the 10 athletes who will be making their collegiate debuts.
St. John's and Cornell will face off for the sixth time in program history. The Red Storm captured the last match in three sets.
Colgate is coming off a strong spring season that saw the Raiders go 8-2 and advance to the championship game of the Patriot League Tournament. Colgate has been selected first in the Patriot League Preseason Poll.
This past weekend, Colgate fell to both Kanas State and No. 5 Nebraska at the Nebraska Tournament.
Colgate returns two-time Patriot League Player of the Year and AVCA Honorable Mention All-American Alli Lowe. Lowe received these accolades after notching a team-high 165 kills and a team-high average 0.32 aces per set.
