St. John’s Finishes Strong at Penn Invite

Vila Antuna shines in Red Storm debut
PHILADELPHIA (Sept. 20, 2021)- The St. John's men's tennis team opened its fall slate at the Penn Invite over the weekend. The Red Storm played opponents from two Philadelphia schools in hosts Penn and Drexel before closing the tournament against players from BIG EAST foe Georgetown.
Lamar transfer Axel Vila Antuna was the lone Johnnie to go undefeated in all three of his singles matches this weekend. The 2021 Southland Conference Player of the Year had a strong St. John's debut, winning his first two individual matches in straight sets. After losing the first set in his final contest, he rallied back for two consecutive 7-6 set victories to outlast Georgetown's Andrew Rozanov.
In doubles competition, Vila Antuna was partnered with returning All-BIG EAST performer Ignacio Garcia. The duo tallied two wins in three tries, both victories came in dominant fashion by a score of 6-1 at the Hamlin Tennis Center.
After dropping his first two matches, freshman Carl Gustafsson posted four straight victories, two singles and two in doubles during his collegiate debut.
St. John's returners Giuseppe De Camelis, Dylan Loru and Charlie James all registered multiple wins on the weekend.
Next on the docket for the Red Storm, the International Tennis Association (ITA) All-American Championships held In Tulsa, Okla. on Oct. 2-10.
