Red Storm recorded its third straight shutout behind Gavran on Saturday night
QUEENS, N.Y. – For the second time in as many opportunities, Luka Gavran has been named the BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week, it was announced on Monday afternoon by the conference office.
Â
In the Red Storm's BIG EAST home opener on Saturday night against Creighton, Gavran recorded five saves, including three in the final eight minutes, to help the Red Storm (6-2-0, 2-0-0 BIG EAST) beat the Bluejays, 2-0, and remain perfect in league play.
Last Monday, Gavran earned his first weekly award from the BIG EAST after pitching a pair of 1-0 shutouts in back-to-back outings against Columbia and Xavier. In the Red Storm's league opener against the Musketeers, Gavran made three stops to help St. John's defeat the Musketeers in Cincinnati for the first time.
Â
Gavran, a redshirt junior from Hamilton, Ont., has now recorded clean sheets in each of his last three and five of his eight appearances overall this season. Those five shutouts are good enough for the league lead in that category.Â
Â
Gavran also ranks near the top of the BIG EAST in goals against average (0.63-4th) and save percentage (.833-3rd).
Â
Behind Gavran's stellar play in goal, St. John's is off to a 2-0-0 start in BIG EAST play for the third time in the last five seasons.Â
Â
Gavran and the Red Storm will close out the non-conference portion of their schedule on Tuesday evening when they travel to Princeton. Kick-off against the Tigers is scheduled for 8 p.m. at Class of 1952 Stadium. The contest will be broadcast live on ESPN+.Â
