St. John’s Set to Host No. 16 Creighton and Providence

Red Storm welcomes the Bluejays and the Friars
QUEENS, N.Y. (Sept. 30, 2021) – After six straight matches on the road, the St. John's volleyball team will return home this weekend for its first contests of the year at Carnesecca Arena.
The Johnnies return to action against No. 16 Creighton on Friday at 7 p.m. before facing Providence the following day at 4 p.m. Both matches can be found on ESPN3 and live stats will also be available on RedStormSports.com.
The Red Storm is currently 1-1 in BIG EAST play after matches at Connecticut and Seton Hall. Against Connecticut, St. John's fell in three sets with scores of 25-23, 25-22, and 26-24, respectively. The close match went to Connecticut after it recorded 17 blocks in comparison to St. John's five. 21 hours later, the Johnnies traveled to New Jersey where they defeated Seton Hall in four sets with scores of 29-27, 25-22, 24-26, and 28-26, respectively. Klara Mikelova recorded a double-double in the victory with 14 kills and 12 digs.
On the national leaderboards, St. John's players continue to occupy top spots in multiple statistical categories. Rachele Rastelli is ranked third in both total points with 281.5 and total kills with 241. She is also 29th with 4.85 points per set, 32nd with 562 total attacks and 36th with 4.16 kills per set. Tiziana Baumrukova sits in seventh place with 572 total assists and is ranked 38th with 10.59 assists per set.
Ariadni Kathariou is currently 10th in the nation with 69 total blocks.
Creighton is the reigning BIG EAST Champion and was chosen to repeat that honor in the Coaches' Preseason Poll. This season, Creighton boasts a 14-1 overall record, including wins against four power conference teams and reigning national champion Kentucky. The Bluejays' loss came against an in-state rival, then- No.3 Nebraska. Creighton is ranked 16th in the AVCA Coaches Top 25 Poll after going 2-0 in BIG EAST play last weekend against Butler and Xavier. The Bluejays return Preseason All-BIG EAST picks Jaela Zimmerman and Noami Hickman. Zimmerman currently leads Creighton with 4.04 kills per set while Hickman leads the Bluejays with 1.24 blocks per set.
The last time the Red Storm and the Bluejays played each other was in the 2019 BIG EAST Tournament when St. John's swept top-ranked Creighton in three sets to advance to the championship game.
Providence was selected to finish eighth in the preseason poll after completing last spring with a 5-3 record in conference play. Providence will play Seton Hall on Friday before coming to Queens on Saturday. The Friars are currently 12-3 overall, but 0-2 in conference play. Last weekend, the Providence won the first two sets against Xavier before falling to the Musketeers in five sets. Against Butler, the Friars lost in three sets. Allison Barber, a Preseason All-BIG EAST pick, Barber currently leads the Friars with 553 total assists and 10.43 assists per set.
