Antek Sienkiel scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season in the loss
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – After seeing St. John's pull even on an Antek Sienkiel goal in the 79th minute, Seton Hall added another late tally to claim a 2-1 victory on Saturday night at Owen T. Carroll Field.
Sienkiel's goal was his sixth of the season, a total that is good enough for second in the BIG EAST. The Marist transfer is the first Johnnie to log six or more goals in a season since Tani Oluwaseyi found the back of the net 11 times in 2019 on his way to BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year honors.
Wesley Leggett picked up his team-leading third assist of the season on Sienkiel's goal. The senior forward also registered a game-high four shots, all of which resulted in quality scoring chances but narrowly missed their target.
St. John's outshot Seton Hall on the match, 17-7, including a 14-3 edge in the second half alone. The Red Storm also earned seven corner kicks to the Pirates' three.
Einar Lye and Jordan Bailon recorded three shots apiece for St. John's (3-6-1, 1-2-0 BIG EAST).
Andrea Borg scored the game-winning goal for Seton Hall, his third of the season. The senior from Malta also helped create the Pirates' first marker, sending a cross into the box that resulted in an own goal.
Seton Hall (4-1-4, 1-0-2 BIG EAST) came out on the front foot, registering two shots and earning a pair of corners in the opening 10 minutes of action.
Not long after the Pirates' initial barrage, St. John's began to level the field. The Red Storm tallied two quality chances between the 25th and 30th minutes, as Lye sent a cross that just missed its target in the box in the 26th before Leggett narrowly missed the far post in the 39th.
St. John's came out firing to start the second half, taking three shots in the opening five minutes and five of the period's first six shots overall.
Sienkiel nearly put the Red Storm on top in the 56th, as he unloaded on a ball that was tracking for the back of the net before Seton Hall defender Luca Dahn managed to chip it over the bar.
Not long after that Sienkiel chance, Seton Hall got on the board first in the 59th minute. Borg sent a cross in from the right side that went off the foot of a St. John's defender and into the goal.
Now facing a one-goal deficit, St. John's continued to press. Bailon put a shot on target less than a minute later before Aidan Borra sent a blast just over the bar in the 64th. Lye tallied back-to-back chances in the 68th and 71st minutes before Leggett narrowly missed his mark again in the 78th.
Just 90 seconds later, Leggett set up Sienkiel's equalizer. After corralling a pass from Leggett near the top-left corner of the 18-yard box, Sienkiel threw a fake that sent his defender the wrong way. He then took a hard step toward the middle of the field before burying a right-footed blast in the bottom-left corner of the cage.
With St. John's firmly on the front foot, Leggett launched a potential go-ahead goal just inches right of the far post in the 84th.
Less than a minute later, Borg found the back of the net off assists from Quenzi Huerman and Liam Guske to put Seton Hall ahead 2-1.
St. John's managed two more shots in the closing minutes before Seton Hall closed out the match.
The Red Storm will return to action at Belson Stadium on Wednesday night when it welcomes unbeaten Xavier, the no. 18 team in the country, to Queens.
