St. John’s Dominates Seton Hall in Four Sets

Red Storm takes sole possession of third place in the BIG EAST standings with triumph over Pirates
QUEENS, N.Y. (Oct. 12, 2022) – The St. John's volleyball team took down Seton Hall in four sets on Wednesday night in Carnesecca Arena.
With the win, the Red Storm (14-6, 5-2 BIG EAST) move in to third place in the BIG EAST standings breaking the tie with the Pirates (13-6, 4-3).
Freshman Lucrezia Lodi notched her fifth double-double of the season with 13 kills and 10 digs. The NCAA's leader in total assists, Wiktoria Kowalczyk tallied a match-high 51 assists. Giorgia Walther led the team with 24 kills while hitting .378. Rachele Rastelli added 14 kills of her own. Magda Stambrowska led the Red Storm defense with five blocks and added five kills while hitting .556.
The Red Storm hit .256 in the match and held the Pirates to hitting .152. The Johnnies led in blocks, 13-11 and kills, 60-47.
St. John's grabbed the early 10-6 advantage following back-to-back blocks by the Red Storm defense. An 8-2 run helped the Johnnies break out to hold the 22-15 edge late in the set. Stambrowska sealed the 25-16 victory at the service line, concluding the set with an ace. Walther's six kills led the team to hit at a .440 clip in the set. Stambrowska recorded four of her team-high five blocks in the stanza and added three kills.
In the second set, the teams went point-for-point until a 10-3 Seton Hall run gave the Pirates a 14-10 lead. With the teams tied at 24, a kill by Walther, and a Pirates attack error clinched the 26-24 Red Storm victory. Bree Martin tallied four of her team-high 18 digs in the stanza. The closely contested battle featured 13 ties and five lead changes.
The Red Storm struggled in the third frame, trailing 5-1 early in the set. After tying the contest for the first time at 11 each, the Pirates went on the attack, extending their advantage to hold the 15-12 edge. Trailing 24-20, St. John's strung together four straight points to force extra points, but the Johnnies were unable to close out the frame and fell 26-24. Walther and Lodi each added five kills and three digs.
Trailing 11-9 in the fourth set, the Johnnies broke out on a 9-1 run to be on top 18-12. The Red Storm kept the lead for the remainder of the stanza and a kill by Walther closed out the set, 25-22. Walther registered nine of her 24 kills in the frame.
St. John's will travel for three-straight road matches, beginning with Butler on Sunday afternoon at historic Hinkle Fieldhouse. First serve is slated for 1 p.m. and will be broadcasted on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
