St. John’s Travels to Butler for Sunday Matinee

Red Storm begins three-match road trip
QUEENS, N.Y. (Oct. 11, 2022) – After winning a pivotal midweek match against Seton Hall in four sets, the St. John's volleyball team will embark on a three-match road trip opening with Butler on Sunday afternoon at historic Hinkle Fieldhouse.
The match, which will be available to stream on BEDN, will begin at 1 p.m.
The Red Storm is currently in sole possession of third place in the BIG EAST standings with a 5-2 league record.
With the win against the Pirates, the Johnnies improve to 10-1 at home this season.
Sophomore Giorgia Walther was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for the second time this season on Monday. Walther led the conference last weekend with 4.67 kills per set and was second-best with 5.00 points per set. On Saturday, she recorded her second double-double of the season with 17 kills and 13 digs against DePaul.
The NCAA's leader with 897 total assists, Wiktoria Kowalczyk has been a key piece to the Red Storm potent offensive attack. Reigning BIG EAST Player of the Year Rachele Rastelli has been having a record-breaking season, climbing up the St. John's all-time statistical leaderboards, cracking the top five in total attacks, kills, and service aces. Among all active Division I players, the Parma, Italy native ranks fourth with 1,711 career kills, and 17th with 4,122 career attacks. Rastelli earned BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week honors on Sept. 26, for the first time in her career.
The Red Storm paces the nation with 1,114 total kills and 1,044 total assists. Two of the nation's best hitters, Walther and Rastelli along with setter Kowalczyk have fueled the attack. St. John's is the only team in the nation to have multiple players in the top 15 for total kills. Walther (303) and Rastelli (296), rank 12th and 14th, respectively.
St. John's tops the league in two categories on the defensive side of the court. The Red Storm boasts conference-best marks of 2.40 blocks per set, and 2.61 blocks per stanza in BIG EAST play. The Johnnies 10.38 opponent digs per set are the lowest in the conference.
Butler picked up a pair of 3-1 wins last weekend against Villanova and Georgetown at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The Bulldogs will host Seton Hall Friday night before welcoming the Red Storm on Sunday afternoon.
Cora Taylor was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week on Monday after tallying 35 or more assists in both matches. She also recorded 19 and 13 digs in each match to earn her sixth and seventh double-doubles of the season. Taylor's 9.50 assists per set was the highest average for a BIG EAST freshman this weekend.
Libero Jameyson Kinley received an honor by the conference this week as she was selected to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday. Kinley paced the BIG EAST averaging 6.25 digs over the weekend. Her 5.59 digs per stanza on the season tops the BIG EAST.
Mariah Grunze leads the team and ranks sixth in the conference in kills.
