St. John's Sweeps Butler on the Road

Red Storm on three match winning streak
INDIANAPOLIS (Oct. 16, 2022) – The St. John's volleyball team swept Butler in historic Hinkle Fieldhouse on Sunday afternoon.
The Red Storm (15-6, 6-2 BIG EAST) swept the Bulldogs (10-10,4-4) for the third time in program history and the first time at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
St. John's solidifies its third position in the BIG EAST standings.
The NCAA leader in total assists, Wiktoria Kowalczyk led the team with 20. Freshman Erin Jones tallied a season-high 15 helpers while recording 6 digs.
Eleonora Tosi was the only Johnnie with a double-digit effort in kills with 10.
Bree Martin returned to her home state, registering a team-high 9 digs.
St. John's hit .275 in the match and only allowed Butler to hit .157. The Red Storm held the BIG EAST digs per set leaders, Bulldogs to just 27 digs in the three set match.
After a slow start to the first set, the Red Storm trailed, 15-10. The Johnnies tied up the set at 15, on a 5-0 run. The frame included seven ties and went point-for-point concluded by back-to-back kills by Tosi to give St. John's the 25-22 victory. Tosi led the Johnnies with 5 kills in the stanza.
The second frame started with six ties before the Red Storm held an 8-7 lead. The Johnnies then established its control of the stanza breaking out to a 7-0 streak. St. John's was able to stop any Bulldog comeback attempts and took the set, 25-15. Rastelli and Tosi led with 4 kills, while the team hit .500 in frame.
The Red Storm closed the match in the third set. Butler jumped out to a 9-4 lead, but the Johnnies were able to overcame the early deficit. The Johnnies used an 8-3 run to tie the frame at 12. The remainder of the stanza featured eight ties as a back-and-forth battle ensued. Kills by Lucrezia Lodi and Tosi cinched the match for the Red Storm.
St. John's will conclude its three consecutive road matches next weekend starting with DePaul at 7 p.m. The Red Storm will conclude the weekend Saturday night with a 5 p.m. match at Marquette.
