Red Storm riding a three match winning streak
QUEENS, N.Y. (Oct. 20, 2022) – After a perfect 2-0 week against Seton Hall and Butler, the St. John's volleyball team will travel to the Midwest for a pair of road games. The Red Storm will open the weekend with a Friday night matchup against DePaul before a Saturday evening contest at No. 19 Marquette.
Both matches will be streamed on BEDN on Flo Sports. The DePaul match will start at 8 p.m. ET time at McGrath-Phillips Arena on Friday night. First serve against
Marquette is set for 5 p.m. ET on Saturday evening at the Al McGuire Center.
The Red Storm is currently in sole possession of third place in the BIG EAST standings with a 6-2 league record, holding a two-win lead over three teams tied at 4-4.
Giorgia Walther was named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week for the first time in her career on Monday. The sophomore recorded 24 kills on Wednesday against Seton Hall, which was the highest by a BIG EAST individual in four sets. Overall this weekend, she totaled 31 kills, 15 digs and three service aces. The Cannobio, Italy, native had received two BIG EAST Weekly Honor selections earlier this season.
Leading the BIG EAST with 917 total assists, Wiktoria Kowalczyk has been a key piece to the Red Storm potent offensive attack. Reigning BIG EAST Player of the Year Rachele Rastelli has been having a record-breaking season, climbing up the St. John's all-time statistical leaderboards and cracking the top five in total attacks, kills, and service aces. Among all active Division I players, the Parma, Italy, native ranks sixth with 1,720 career kills, and 17th with 4,141 career attacks. Rastelli has earned three BIG EAST weekly honors this season including Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 26.
The Red Storm paces the nation with 1,156 total kills and 1,084 total assists. Two of the nation's best hitters, Walther and Rastelli, along with Kowalczyk have fueled the attack. St. John's is the only team in the nation to have multiple players in the top 20 for total kills. Walther (310) and Rastelli (305), rank 14th and 19th, respectively.
St. John's tops the league in two categories on the defensive side of the court. The Red Storm boasts conference-best marks of 2.40 blocks per set, and 2.58 blocks per stanza in BIG EAST play. The Johnnies 10.38 opponent digs per set are the lowest in the conference.
DePaul enters the weekend after tough road losses to Xavier and Creighton. Against The Bluejays led 2-1 after three sets but, Creighton rallied back to take fourth set, 25-12 before winning the fifth set, 15-11.
The Blue Demons are currently 2-6 in the BIG EAST, tied with four teams for eighth in the standings.
Jill Pressly leads the DePaul offensive attack and is fourth in the conference in two statistical categories, kills per set (3.59) and points per frame (4.02). Rachel
Krasowski ranks second in the conference and 19th nationally with 5.12 digs per set.
St. John's leads the all-time series with DePaul, 19-8. The Red Storm swept the Blue Demons when the two teams met earlier this season in Carnessecca Arena.
No. 19 Marquette enters the weekend after losing a tough match against Creighton last week before sweeping Xavier on the road. After winning the first two sets against Creighton, the Blue Jays won the next three sets to hand the Golden Eagles their first loss in conference play.
The Golden Eagles will host Seton Hall on Friday night, before its contest against the Red Storm.

Standout Carsen Murray leads the conference in hitting percentage (.405) and blocks per set (1.11). Murray's .405 hitting percentage ranks 15th in the nation.
