Red Storm on four match winning streak
CHICAGO (Oct. 21, 2022) – The St. John's volleyball team opened its weekend by sweeping DePaul on Friday night in the McGrath-Phillips Arena.
The Red Storm (16-6, 7-2 BIG EAST) swept the Blue Demons (6-15, 2-7) for the second time this season.
"Outstanding BIG EAST road performance by our squad tonight." said coach Joanne Persico. "It was a full team effort and we were able to keep DePaul hitting a season-low .091 and we hit .318. I am very proud of Wiktoria Kowalczyk for leading the team to victory."
A well balanced attack resulted in the first conference match of the season that the Johnnies did not have any players with double digit efforts in kills. Giorgia Walther and Rachele Rastelli paced the team with 9 kills apiece.
Magda Stambroska registered a team-high four blocks and added six kills, while hitting a perfect 1.000.
Wiktoria Kowalczyk tallied a match-high 32 helpers.
The Red Storm hit .318 opposed to the Blue Demons hitting at an .091 clip. The Johnnies out dug DePaul 34-25. St. John's did not record a reception error in the match for the first time this season.
The Red Storm started off very hot in the first set. Stambrowska started the offensive attack with three kills in the first five points for St. John's. Walther added to the St. John's attack with a set-high five kills. The team hit .435 with 14 kills in the frame.
In the second frame, DePaul attempted to avenge its first set loss, and used a 5-0 run to take a 10-8 lead. The Red Storm kept its composure the rest of the frame and took the victory, 25-19. Bree Martin recorded six of her team-high 10 digs in the stanza.
The Red Storm dominated the third set to finish the sweep. With the frame tied at 4, a kill by Rastelli gave the Johnnies the lead for the remainder of the stanza. Lucrezia Lodi prevented a DePaul comeback recording back-to-back kills two separate times in the frame, with the latter giving St. John's a 17-12 lead. The Johnnies capitalized on back-to-back errors to end the match, 25-19. Rastelli paced the team with five of her nine kills in the final set.
