St. John’s Draws with Marquette, 1-1, on Senior Day, Clinches BIG EAST Tournament Berth

Nicole Gordon tallied her fourth goal of the season
QUEENS, N.Y.- The St. John's women's soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to five games, drawing with Marquette, 1-1, and clinching a spot in the BIG EAST tournament on Sunday afternoon at Belson Stadium.
Nicole Gordon scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season, and Melina Couzis tallied her fourth assist of 2022. Gordon, Couzis, Ava Collins and Isabelle Aviza each logged at least one shot with Gordon leading the way with three attempts, all of which were on target.
Gina Muzi made her 17th start in goal for the Johnnies, racking up two saves on Senior Day. Despite the one goal allowed, Muzi still boasts a stingy goals-against average of 0.73.
After a tense opening 10 minutes, Aviza attempted the first shot of the afternoon for the Red Storm in the 14th minute, but the try was off to the right of the net.
Julia O'Neill fired the first attempt at the net for Marquette (7-7-3, 3-4-2 BIG EAST) in the 20th. minute, but the ball sailed harmlessly over the net.
Less than a minute later, Couzis found Gordon on the left side of the penalty box, and the forward calmly passed the ball into the bottom right corner of the net to give the Red Storm an early 1-0 lead at the 24:35 mark of the opening 45 minutes.
After Gordon's score, both teams locked in defensively for the remainder of the first half with neither side allowing a shot attempt.
St. John's (7-4-6, 4-2-3 BIG EAST) controlled the initial 15-plus minutes of the second half, outshooting the Golden Eagles, 3-1, through the 63rd minute.
Marquette refused to go down without a fight as two shots by Isabella Cook and Alex Campana, respectively, clanged off the crossbar in 76th minute, but the Johnnies kept the Golden Eagles at bay and kept their 1-0 lead heading into the final quarter-hour of the match.
Following two straight corners, Marquette found paydirt on a third straight set piece in the 84th minute as Elsi Twombly found the back of the net off a long assist from Mia Haertle.
The Golden Eagles had one last scoring chance in the 88th minute, but the Twombly shot was saved by Muzi, and the match ended in a 1-1 draw on Sunday.
The Red Storm will close out the regular season on the road when it travels to Chicago to take on DePaul on Thursday. Kick-off from Wish Field is scheduled for 4 p.m. and will air on the BIG EAST Digital Network on FloSports.
