St. John’s Set to Take On UConn in First Round of BIG EAST Championship

Kick-off from Belson Stadium is set for 1 p.m. on Sunday
QUEENS, N.Y.- The St. John's women's soccer team will make its 2022 postseason debut on Sunday when they welcome the Connecticut Huskies to Belson Stadium for a 1 p.m. showdown.
The first-round match between the third-seeded Johnnies and sixth-seeded Huskies will air on the BIG EAST Digital Network on FloSports with Drew Casey on the call from Queens.
Should the Red Storm prevail against UConn, it will take on the No. 2 seed Xavier on Thursday in Boyds, Md.
This marks the Johnnies' 17th appearance in the BIG EAST Championship and second consecutive trip to the tournament after reaching the conference final in 2021
St. John's finished the regular season with a record of 7-4-6 and a mark of 4-2-3 in BIG EAST matches. The Johnnies enter Sunday's tilt on the heels of a five-match unbeaten streak dating back to Oct. 6. Last time out, Nicole Gordon tallied her fourth goal of the season in a 1-1 draw against the Marquette Golden Eagles on Oct. 23.
Senior midfielder Jessica Garziano paces the Red Storm in points with 11 while Gordon follows close behind with 10. Garziano also boasts the team lead in shots and shots on goal with 33 and 16, respectively. The Melville, N.Y. finished the regular season with five assists, tying her with UConn transfer Melina Couzis for the most among the Johnnies squad.
Goalkeeper Gina Muzi has started every match for the Red Storm this season, tallying 40 saves and allowing only 12 goals to opponents in 17 appearances. Muzi's seven shutouts during the regular season tied her for second in the BIG EAST. The Delafield, Wis., native also owns top-10 marks in the conference in saves, save percentage and goals-against average.
Connecticut clinched the last playoff spot on the final day of the regular season on Thursday, knocking off Seton Hall, 4-0. The Huskies wrapped up the 2022 regular season with a mark of 8-6-3.
Junior forward Jada Konte leads UConn on the offensive side of the ball with 14 points (five goals and four assists) in 17 starts. Freshman forward Choma Okafor comes into Sunday's match with momentum after tallying a hat-trick against Seton Hall on Thursday.
Kaitlyn Mahoney has been the primary starter in between the pipes for the Huskies, making 13 appearances this season. Mahoney boasts 47 stops and a goals-against average of 0.80 in more than 1,100 minutes this year.
This will be the 27th meeting between the two schools in the series history with the Huskies leading, 18-7-1. However, the Johnnies won the most recent matchup on Sept. 25, 1-0, as part of an undefeated run at home in conference play.
