Late-Game Equalizer Sends St. John’s to a Tie with Creighton, 1-1

Brooke Boyd’s header with nine seconds remaining grabs a crucial point for the Red Storm
QUEENS, N.Y. – With less than 10 seconds remaining in the match, a perfectly placed Brooke Boyd header found the back of the net for St. John's, to salvage a 1-1 draw with Creighton at Belson Stadium on Thursday night.
As time was winding down, Jailene DeJesus played a ball back to Ava Collins, who threaded a cross that found the head of Boyd by the near post. The graduate student sent a header home for the equalizer to grab a point for the Red Storm (5-4-4, 2-2-1 BIG EAST) in conference play.
Gina Muzi earned the start as the senior goalkeeper logged two stops in her 75 minutes played. Kayla Bower saw her first collegiate action late in the match, as the freshman tallied two crucial saves to keep the Bluejays within reach. Making her 13th-straight start, Keelan Terrell logged three saves for Creighton (6-2-5, 2-2-1 BIG EAST) in the conference draw.
The Bluejays outshot the Red Storm, 17-11, but corner kicks favored the Johnnies squad, 4-1.
Creighton got off the first shots of the match with the second taking place in the 15th minute, but the Johnnies countered with an Emily Riggins attempt that went above the crossbar. Boyd had the best look of the half for the Red Storm as she sent a header toward the net in the 25th minute. Terrell made a heroic stop on the play, ending the rally for the Red Storm. The final look of the period for the home side came from DeJesus in the 27th minute but the sophomore's attempt landed wide.
The Bluejays fired a flurry of of shots at Muzi towards the end of the opening half. After Muzi made a stop in the 38th minute, Abigail Santana sent a rocket that hit off the crossbar that nearly bounced down into the net. Despite the best efforts by both teams, neither squad was able to get on the board before the break.
Creighton drew first blood in the 49th minute when Spencer sent a blast by Muzi for the midfielder's third tally of the year. Looking for the equalizer, Nicole Gordon had a pair of shots saved by Terrell, with the second coming in the 54th minute. Melina Couzis, Katherine Turner and Isabelle Aviza tallied looks for the Red and White, but the player's attempts fell flat.
After the Bluejays took their final shot in the 89th minute, Bower launched a goal kick toward the opposition's side of the field. Frantically looking for a chance to tie, DeJesus connected with Collins outside the box. The Auckland, New Zealand native sent a pass to Boyd, who nailed a header into the back of the net with just nine seconds remaining in the match. The tally secured a crucial point in BIG EAST play and the 1-1 draw for the Red Storm.
St. John's is back in action with a rematch of last year's BIG EAST Quarterfinals at Providence on Sunday. Kick-off from Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium is slated for 1 p.m. and will air on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
