Vila Antuna and Marques Punch Ticket to ITA Super Regionals in Doubles Play

Duo to compete for spot in singles bracket on Monday
PHILADELPHIA. – St. John's men's tennis players Diogo Marques and Axel Vila Antuna clinched their spot in ITA Super Regionals in doubles competition on Sunday. After earning a bye in the 48-team doubles bracket at ITA Northeast Regionals, the pairing won three matches to move onto Super Regionals at Harvard on Oct. 21-22.
In their first match in Philadelphia, the prolific duo competed against familiar faces as they took on their own teammatesAdam Groves and Carl Gustavsson, narrowly defeating them 8-7 (4). On Sunday, they eased past Yale's Aidan Reilly and Renaud Lefevre, 8-3. In their final contest, the two veterans sealed their spot to compete against the region's best with an 8-4 triumph over Dimitry Bezborodov and Alex Zuckerman of Monmouth, 8-4.
After receiving byes in the singles bracket, both Vila Antuna and Marques advanced their way to the final day of competition. The tandem will look to solidify their place in Super Regionals in singles tomorrow morning.
Vila Antuna started off play by sweeping his way past Fordham's Dhillon Virdee-Oakley, 6-1, 6-2. In a battle with UPenn's Zach Lim, the senior clawed his way back from down a set to move on, 1-6, 6-4, 7-5. The Valencia, Spain native will meet Yale's Zach Oberg on Monday to compete for a Super Regionals bid.
After tallying three victories at the ITA All-American Championships, Marques continued his success at the Hamlin Tennis Center this weekend. The graduate student opened individual play with a sweep of Samuel Paquette of Cornell, 6-0, 6-4. In the next round, the Stetson transfer swung past Monmouth's Bezborodov 6-0, 6-3. Marques will take on Yale's Vignesh Gogineni at the Hamlin Tennis Center tomorrow morning.
Ryota Kaneda displayed a strong showing in the City of Brotherly Love. The sophomore blanked Bryce Bodak of Niagara, 6-0, 6-4, before falling to Princeton's Sebastian Sec in singles. Partnered with Roger Rogowski, the pairing tallied one win over Jan Godfrey Seno and Diego Gil Garcia from St. Francis Brooklyn.
Vila Antuna and Marques will compete tomorrow in the final day of the ITA Northeast Regionals at 10 a.m. at the University of Pennsylvania.
