Graduate student garners national recognition after exemplary fall campaign
QUEENS, N.Y. – St. John's men's tennis standout Diogo Marques was ranked the no. 113 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, the organization announced on Wednesday morning.
After arriving from Stetson, Marques quickly established himself as a force to be reckoned with, turning in a 9-2 overall record in singles play across four competitions this fall.
At the ITA All-American Championships, Marques shined on the national stage tallying three victories. He defeated prominent opponents from Vanderbilt, Cal-Berkely and Santa Clara, advancing to the Round of 32 in the pre-qualifying draw on Oct. 2. His finish marked the best of any Red Storm player at the event since 2019.
Just a week later, the Stetson transfer continued his strong play, logging three wins in regional competition to earn one of eight open spots at the ITA Super Regionals.
In a battle of the Northeast's best, Marques prevailed in his opening match over Harvard's Massato Perrer, 7-5, 6-1. In the following round, the Johnnie took then-no. 10 ranked Alex Kotzen of Columbia to three sets, but ultimately fell, 2-6, 6-0, 4-6.
Marques and doubles partner Axel Vila Antuna shined throughout the fall slate, as the pairing compiled a 6-1 record. The duo reached the semifinal round of Super Regionals, tallying two victories in a field of the 16 best doubles team in the region.
Today's ranking marks the highest for Marques since 2019. The Setubal, Portugal native checked in at no. 103, as a member of East Carolina.
Marques and the Red Storm will be back in action in January for the 2023 season.
